  1. Someday... I'll have a fence on my 5 acres.  But for now, I have an e-collar (not an invisible fence, but a training collar).

It sucks to shock my dog, but if its between that and him running toward a road or into my neighbors garden - so be it.

Actually, my dog loves his shock collar.  He gets all excited when he sees it because he knows we're going out for a good long run and play session.  He's pretty collar-wise and knows he can't get away with running off when he's wearing that collar.  I never have to use it anymore, he just has to THINK I'll use it.

  2. This would be a great solution. You just have to train your dog and teach him that crossing the fence will HURT..LOL. no but serious you have to teach him that or they will find out that it will hurt for a little bit if they just run though it. This was the best invention for dogs. Just make sure you train them.....

  3. I understand what you mean about the "pitbull" appearance. It sucks everyone thinks their horrible, when they're really not. I have 3 of them and their the most caring and loyal dogs I've ever had or saw. The shock collars would work I would imagine, they hurt but they get used to not going out past its boundaries. Its not bad enough to hurt them seriously unless they're dumb, which i doubt, and just keep shocking themselves lol. Pitbulls are smart enough to learn so I think just a few shocks with the collar would teach them their boundaries

  4. We live on the water and we have a black lab who LOVES to swim, so it's impossible for us to use an electric fence.  We opted to get a Dogtra e-collar and we were trained on how to use it.  I don't suggest anyone getting a shock collar without being trained on how to use it because it can end up confusing your dog and making him/her a bit neurotic.

If you decide to choose a shock collar OR an electric fence consult a dog behaviorist or trainer!! They will know what's best for your breed.

  5. Electric fences are a waste of money.  If they pass the "boundary" and get shocked, they often don't want to come back because they will get shocked again.  Additionally, it keeps nothing out of your yard either.

Electric collars work wonderfully for a variety of issues, but I would contact a professional to assist you in using one.

If I were you, I would just fence off (with a real fence) a portion of your acreage for your dog.
