Question:

Dog spayed, hard at incision?

My 5 mo. old Westie was spayed on Tuesday and I've noticed that at her incision, it is hard. She is acting for the most part fine and hyper as usual. Does anyone know if this is maybe just swelling or if it's ok? I don't want to call the vet and sound over-cautious.

  1. Many times after a spay the incision will develop a lump under it that is hard. It comes from the internal stitches and it takes time for them to reabsorb. If the dog is to active they can get the lump.

As long as the incision site is clean and dry and not leaking anything and not red around it or hot things are fine.

Make sure you pup is eating and drinking normally and watch for signs of infection. If none things should be fine.

  2. Swelling, oozing and redness are signs of an infection.  If you have concerns though it never hurts to call your vet and express them over the phone rather than making the trip in.

I love westies they're so cute.

  3. Our dog turned out to be allergic to the material the stitches were made out of. Once they were out, the wound healed up much better.

  4. I assume the stitches are still in?  Maybe it's just scar tissue.  But, don't be afraid to call the vet and ask.  Better safe than sorry.

  5. As long as it is not red, swollen or seeping, Im sure it's just the scar tissue forming.

Don't worry about calling your vet.  Most vets are very understanding.  If that's what you would feel better doing, then do it.
