So I was playing with my puppy today and he loves to play with his tail. And the question came to mind, can dogs control their tails? Is it involuntary when they wag it? Please answer. :)

  1. It is voluntary.  The tail is a continuation of the spine.

  2. yeah they can control it

  3. Of course dogs can control their tails!  Tails are often used by dogs to communicate with others.  Dogs wag their tails only when they want to.  Although some dogs wag their tails so enthusiastically that it doesn't seem they have any control...even to the point that they may break their tail.

  4. Yes, they can control their tails. A wagging dog tail is like a human smile:  they feel it, and they do it.

  5. They can control it, yeah, but it's not like they'll consciously go "WAG, TAIL. WAG." It's most of a habit, like how some people shake their leg or twiddle their fingers. It's responsive to their mood.
