Question:

Dog types with the least amount of health issues?

I have been looking online for information about dogs, and while I know all dogs with have health problems eventually, I'm having trouble finding out which ones are most likely to have the LEAST amount of problems.

I had a wonderful beagle who lived 9 wonderful years and the only issues she had was lyme disease (which really didn't effect her til her last few months). I don't think I could care for another beagle.

The type doesn't matter, large, small, long hair, short hair... just one that I won't have to worry so much about (healthwise).

Any information is greatly appreciated =)

  1. All purebred dogs have the *possibility* of carrying certain genetic faults--if they are not bred by responsible breeders who carefully test their dogs to make sure they don't carry those diseases.

While many people say that mutts are healthier, this is not always true.  With a mutt, generally nothing is known about the parents that bred them, so they may carry hidden genetic faults.   With a shelter dog, long-term health is an unknown, but they may live long & healthy lives with no problems.  A carefully chosen breeder will have tested for problems.  Dogs from pet stores or back-yard breeders will almost certainly have health problems.

  2. Well, if you want long term I would most def. stay away form the large breeds. They tend to start going down hill after age 8 due to hip and heart conditions.

To be honest, I'm not sure if your into this breed, but, my Uncle had a Dachshund<sp?>(wiener dog) that lived for 22 years!!! My Grandmother also had one that lived for 18 years. We never had problems with their health believe it or not. They just passed due to old age.

  3. Get a cross-bred (Mutt) they dont carry any bragging rights but they are less trouble in the long run. They can be very cute and loving too!
