My dog will not use the bathroom outside for defecation when it is raining, and, instead will retreat back to the house and goes within 15-20 minutes of being indoors. He will immediately turn back to go inside with no attempt to go outside despite me returning him to his spots, and taking him out every hour to two hours, and crating him. Any suggestions as to why he is doing this and how to prevent it? I am afraid that I will have to get rid of him if this continues, and hope someone can help. Thanks!

  1. He's embarrassed.  Defecate with him and all will be well.

  2. What the heck does this have to go with hockey?

  3. beat the **** outta it with a paddle =]

    ...kidding. really just kidding

  4. He obviously doesn't like going to the bathroom in the rain (but then again I wouldn't like having to take a poo in the rain either :D). Our dog had the same problem going for her. What we did was leave her out if she didn't go, we would let her in, give her about 20 minutes and let her out again. After awhile she got so fed up with being let out in the rain every 20 minutes that she would just go.

The other thing that you can try is creating an awning or covered area for him to be under while going to the bathroom. It might be unsightly but at least he won't be doing his business in the house.

Finally, you can leave him out there until he goes. The rain won't hurt him any.

  5. You should have thought this through before you got a dog. If this is a reason to get rid of a dog...you shouldn't have had one in the first place. This dog is testing you. Leave the dog out until it goes. if it actually had to go in the first place. Our dogs are given a chance to go twice a day, rain or shine. They'll eventually tell you when they need to go if it's between times. Also...some dogs do not want to go in their own yard. Do you walk the dog or just kick it out into the yard?

**** has the dog had ANY obedience classes? Any training? Is it specifically trained to help out in it's present situation?

  6. My dog has this problem.  She doesn't like going outside when its raining and WILL NOT go outside if there is a thunderstorm.  So when the weather is bad, I put her on the leash and walk her instead of letting her in the backyard.  I mean it stinks cuz I get wet, but the movement and smells helps her go.  We both get wet, but there isn't a mess in the house.

  7.   Like me, he may not like rain on his face.  When I am taking out our dog (always on a leash or rope because of her value), and it is raining, I use a long rope.  Our roof overhangs enough that there is a dry area along side the house and I encouraged her to get there and now she automatically does.

Go out with him, keep him on rope and don't let him in till he goes.  Praise him when he goes when it is dry and do the same when he goes when it is wet.
