Question:

Doggie litter box training, and...?

So, I got a 6 week old pug yesterday :D.

1. I've been told that she shouldn't go outside at all, just in case she contracts a disease or virus. She's already had her first set of shots, but I heard I should wait to let her outside at all until she gets all of them (which would be like, four months). So, is this true? SHOULD I wait?

2. If I can't take her outside, I'd like to litter box train her. For the time being, I'm having her go on puppy pads. Which is actually working pretty well, thankfully. But I'd rather have her learn how to use a litter box in the future. Have any of you done that with your dogs? Do you have any tips/suggestions?

I know nothing of litter box training because I've never done it, so, your help would be much appreciated.

  1. Hurry and do it then because if your dog is pad trained you won't be able to change

I wanted to do the dog litter box w/ my dog but she was already trained to go outside so it was a no go

  2. no, to me litter box training a dog is kind of silly, so are puppy pads... first off this pup shouldnt have left the mother and siblings until 8 weeks old ... and if the pup just goes outside to potty then come back in it will be fine. just keep it up to date on shots and it can go out side for short periods.

  3. My puppies are litter box trained before I send them on to their new homes, and by the way 6 weeks is a bit young to be away from the mother.  Almost all breeders won't part with puppies until they are at least 8 weeks old.  Anyway, if you confine the puppy to a small area.  Just big enough for the puppies sleeping area on one side and the litter box on the other, the pup will leave his bed to potty.  The only place to go will be the litter box.  Also, put a soiled puppy pad in the bottom of the box to put the scent in the box.

As for outside, I wouldn't touch a toe to the ground until all the vaccines are done unless you put it on a matt or protected surface.

  4. Have you taken the time to learn about keeping and training a dog? If not, you really should.
