  1. Somewhere along the line you & your dogs have not paid attention to little signs given off the other.

I found a few sites that may help you, it is all about house training an older dog.  The situations may not apply to yours but there is good advice.  It is not beyond help & it can be done.  It is the techniques & not the situation.  If you want more sites just google or use Yahoo search & pull up House Breaking the older Dog.

  2. I'd put in separate crates overnight in the laundry... Make sure to clean all pee/poo smell first with enzyme cleaner. Sounds  like you are doing good on schedule .. check with vet for medical and read my blog on housebreaking.  make sure your ovenight is not longer thnan 6 hours to start.... set alarm and ty to get there before they go.

    here is link for crates

    http://pampered-puppy.zlio.net/

it also has clean up aids and you might want to consider diapers for night.

  3. Fiona B, I wish I had a a cavalier king charles spaniel.

  4. Confine them to a smaller area, dogs don't like to go in their bed.

Edit, i mean a space only big enough for them to lay down, stand up and turn around, and putting paper down is just teaching them that its OK to use it. Either buy crates for them or box them into the corner.

You will need to get up during the night for a while to let them out in the garden. When they do go out side give them lots of praise but don't over do it during the night or they will think its play time.

When they go indoors do nothing other than clean it up. Don't tell them off or shout at them and they will soon learn that they only get the attention when they go in the right place.

I  crate trained my dog and it was the best thing i could of done and will definitely use a crate again in the future.

  5. You need to crate train your dogs. I have a Cocker Spaniel and they weren't kidding when I heard Spaniels are hard to house train. Every single time you take them outside, go with them and praise them. Then at night, put them in crates. Just make sure to bring them outside before you go to bed and after you wake up. My dog used to p**p and pee throughout the night. I crate trained him and now after about three months he can successfully sleep anywhere and will not go to the bathroom. They need to learn to hold it through the night. It will probably only take a month to break the habit. But after a while, your dogs will love their crates. It's their own individual space. I bought a water bottle (sorta like a hamster water bottle) for my dog's crate and he loves that thing to death. Plus I don't have to worry about him getting thirsty.

  6. I adopted a Bichon 3 weeks ago & that's what i'm going through with her. Because "Bella" was a rescue i  really don't know her exact age but will find out this week from the Vet.  I've struggle with the idea of putting her in a crate. Many dog owners swear by this method in order to rectify this messy problem.  Like you i try to do all the right things to prevent this type of behavior but to no avail.  Maybe we both should give the crate method a try.  Dogs do not relieve themselves in an enclosed area where they bed.  Good Luck! Feel free to e-mail to let me know how you make out.

  7. Paper train them with newspapers.  They have a natural instinct to pee and p**p on newspapers.  Put some newspapers down.  Karen

    The link above may help.

It isn't normal, but it has become a habit for them to do this.  They need to have that habit broken and a new habit started with them going to the toilet where you want them too.

If you are in the UK try: http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv...

We used her book with our dog and a lot of the training tips worked really well.

  9. when you put newspapers down it confuses them to thinking its okay to go to the bathroom indoors

read this link it will help you

    http://www.gomestic.com/Pets/How-to-Succ...

this is NOT normal at this age - it is very likley a training mistake - read the link to see if so... or have them vet checked to rule out medical issues.

  10. yes my dog took over 2 years to housebreak so it just takes time.

    Hope i could help!

  11. Well puppies train at their own pace, and since there are two of them, that could be your problem.  Puppies are not usually fully potty trained until 1-year-old.  I think you are confusing them by leaving paper down, you are teaching them it is o.k. to potty in the house.  I would set an alarm and take them potty during the night since that is the time you are having the problem.  My dogs eat at night, so they have to go potty in the middle of the night. I would crate them at night and make a bed in the crate, puppies don't potty where they eat or sleep, but I really just think it is their age, and that you are trying to train two of them, and I would take them out in the middle of the night.
