Dogs very sick after taking them to the Beach, I'm so Worried!!?

We took our two dogs, 1yr pitt bull and 6month german sheppard to the beach earlier today. They ate breakfast and a few hrs later we took the 45 min ride to the beach. They had lots of fun chasing waves and swimming. It's the gulf of mexico so its salt water and I wasn't worried when they threw up the water shortly after swimming. But it hasn't stopped, and I have never seen diarrhea like this before (think exorcist out the other end) It was a miserable ride home with both of them puking. We gave them plenty of fresh water no food and baths and they are still sick. The sheppard is better but my pit seems very lethargic, not just tired. I tried giving him pepto bismol but I feel horrible forcing him, he hates the taste and cringes at the smell. I don't know what to do the vet isn't open until monday. Is there anything I can do, or am I just over reacting?

  1. YOU DO NOT.. I REPEAT.. DO NOT.. GIVE.. A.. DOG.. HUMAN.. PEPTO.. BISMOL...

This is a definate NO. You probably got your dog even more sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you were a responsible owner, you wouldnt be sitting on the computer wondering what to do. You would be getting your dogs CURED by a VET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. make them some chicken soup with rice in it. I know it sounds old fashiond but it works I think they had to much salt water.  The broth will hydrate them and the rice will help stop the diarrhea.  You can also get some pedialite that babies drink from the store to help as well.  Good luck.

  3. Your not over reacting and most likely if your dogs aren't familiar to salt water, they probably drank a lot of it. And salt water does make you sick and give you diarrhea. You should be fine to wait to take them to the vet on monday. Keep offering them fresh food and water. If you don't think your dog is going to make the wait 'til monday you should seek a emergency vet clinic. Most are open all days of the week and almost all hours. Check your yellow pages and call around. Good luck.

  4. It could be Giardia

  5. I would think it would be the salt water. Plus, no telling what Trop. Storm Faye stirred up. Keep getting them to drink a lot of freshwater and start a bland diet of hamburger meat and plain white rice.

My vet says you can give dogs children Immodium. I have given it to them and it helps. It has to be children's though and give them the children's dose!

I would def. take them to the vet asap. You can't really over react when it's your dog's health. The dog being so lethargic- is a big concern.

    Good luck!

  6. If you have no 24/7 emergency vets in your area, about the only thing you can do until Monday is to make sure they are getting enough water.  Don't try to feed them medicine, our medicine doesn't work on dogs and can do more harm than good.  Did they eat anything on the beach?  It's possible the water was toxic to them in some way.  Check you area phone book for emergency  vets, I think they need to be seen asap.

  7. him maybe its just there food cause my cuz has a german sheperd and she takes her to the beach all the time so try going to the vet

  8. Actually Pepto is quite safe for dogs, but if your pittbull is still sick, you need to take him to the vet. There are emergency clinics everywhere, and if your dog is poisoned or severely dehydrated, he could die.

  9. dogs can get an upset stomach from beach water, especially if they are not used to it.  I would hold off on trying to feed them until the vomiting has stopped.  Not so sure if you can give dogs pepto though so maybe you should stop that as well. Most places do have emergency clinics so if this carries over through tomorrow I would suggest going.

  10. that happened to us at clearwater beach my toy poodle the vet said she got hit by a jelly fish better go to the vet ink was on pills for 3 weeks she was lathargic, puking diarreha, shakes and glazed eyes

  11. How coud you be overreacting, if your dog is so ill?

Look up an emergency clinic, and get them there - it is possible that your Pit swallowed a lot of water, which contained salt - and that is overloading his kidneys badly.  He is in rough shape, and needs emergency care - NOW.  Take the other one, too, just for good measure.

There isn;t much you can do to help him at home- this dog needs and emergency lcinic - please look one up ('emergency veterinarian' and then your zipcode, or name of the closest large city/town)...and GO!

  12. I agree 10000000000000000% with Talinka ☼ !!!!!!!! You do NOT give a dog pepto-bismol !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. With Tropical Storm Fay pushing through there could be all sorts of stuff being churned up. There's got to be a Emergency Vet somewhere near by!

  14. There could have been pollutants in the water that made them sicker than normal.  And if it was a hot day they could have heat stroke as well as severe dehydration.  If you have a thermomter try taking their temp.  If it's over 100 or so, you really need to call an emergency vet.  Try dousing them with room temp water (not cold, it could shock their systems) and keep them hydrated.  Check their temp every hour or so and if it's going down, they'll probably be fine (although you should take them to the vet for a check up just in case) or if their temps are not lowering or are increasing go to the vet immediately.  Severe brain damage could be occurring.  Good luck.

  15. There are emergency vets. I know it costs alot more(been there) but you might be glad you did later. I would not give Pepto anymore. It's too much of a coincidance that both got sick at the same time. It's either food poisoning from what they ate this morning or something in the water. I hope they are better very soon.

  16. You're not overreacting. Any sudden onset of vomiting and diarreah is cause for alarm. They could have eaten something stinky or been exposed to some nasty substance, or (quite likely) have encountered stinging jellyfish. Go to the vet NOW.

    Best wishes.

  17. Dogs are actually Omnivorous.they need alot less meat protein then cats, ferrets or snakes & feeding a high animal protein diet to a dog will take a toll on the dog's health.a dog is designed to to digest a wide range of plant and animal products.Dog's must eat more then muscle meat.they need plenty of carboyhdrates &fibre from vegetable matter and only a very small amount of fat.there protein can come from both plant and animal products.the other things to consider are sources of mineral such as calcium, phosphorous and of cause vitamins.

Dogs are they Carnivores? Are they really like wolves, hyenas, jackals? or Are they more like us? Is it foolish to feed them only meat? Should they be fed what there human family eats? The Truth encompasses a little of each.

In the wild, other hunting animal that seem similar to dogs, such as Wolves, hyenas eat fruit, leaves, grasses, dig for roots and even obtain vegetable matter from the stomach of their prey."

Cooked grains are nearly 100% digestible for dogs. There really isn't a

lot of question about this based on the results of feeding studies. I am not

sure why people come to the conclusion that grains are not good for

    dogs.

Feed a good quality dog food.

NEVER EVER GIVE YOUR DOGS HUMAN MEDICAN, CAN KILL YOUR DOG! Human Medication IS OFTEN DEADLY TOXIC

Your dogs may have gulped down too much salt water at the beach, too much salt water can cause them to be sick.

I would take her the 24hour animal hospital to make sure the HUMAN MEDICATION, HASN'T CAUSED PERMANENT DAMAGE.

Do not give attempt to give him Pepto-Bismol or other products intended for humans. In dogs, these formulas can lead to gastric irritation or ulcers, bleeding problems, seizures and liver damage. Appropriate dosages are unknown, and medicines can be harmful, or even fatal, to canines.
