Doha Competition; the top seed Caroline Wozniacki looking to end the season as number one
World number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark will become one of the most unlikely season end world number ones if she triumphs in two clashes at the WTA Tournament in Doha, which is set to start from Tuesday.
The 20-year-old Dane has improved steadily to a place from which she should secure the 2010 accolade during the elite eight women field in Doha.
After successfully making her way at the top level in the WTA rankings list, the professional tennis ace from Denmark reflected, "this is a really big step for me as it does not feel like it is real.”
Her comments somehow or the other suggested that the actual number one player on the WTA tour is off course the American ace, Serena Williams who has been sidelined due to her right foot injury since winning the grass court Grand Slam title in London.
Moreover, Caroline is also the third player from the women’s side in the past two years after Dinara Safina and Jelena Jankovic to reach the number one spot without even grabbing a single Grand Slam title in her career.
A great variety of sports analysts and experts are not very much impressed by Caroline’s style of play which has been explained as too defensive on the court. The Dane is definitely in the process of building an unflashy, multi-faceted game as well as to
adapt to a variety of fields and opponents.
In fact, without the crash-bang-wallop impact of Serena William as well as Venus Williams, Caroline’s style is arguably more sophisticated than the new top ranked ace is given credit for.
It is without any doubt effective, having won her six trophies this season. Moreover, for those who do not find her game killing, her stunning looks combined with her outgoing personality has attracted admiration and increased her fan following to a great
extent over the recent past.
These qualities also did well to attract a couple of sponsorships for her such as Europaeiske, Babolat, Danske Invest, Sony Ericsson as well as Adidas.
Overall, the Dane has triumphed in a total of fifty nine clashes and lost in only fifteen this season and therefore by the end of this week will not be far short of the massive total of the eighty seven battles she also reached back in 2009.
The contender most likely to trouble the new number one from winning the season send tournament in Doha is this year’s United States Open champion, Kim Clijsters of Belgian who successfully defended her title in New York back in September.
Other players who successfully qualified for the Doha event includes Vera Zvonareva of Russia who has reached the final of a major event twice this season, Francesca Schiavone, the 2010 French Open winner from Italy, Elena Dementieva, the former Olympic
winner of Russia, the former top ranked Jelena Jankovic from Serbia, the French Open runner up Samantha Stosur of Australia as well as the tenth ranked Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.
The professional tennis player from the United States of America, Serena Williams pulled out of the Doha event as a result of her foot injury which was re-torn as the American over-trained. Her elder sister, Venus Williams, on the other hand, withdrew from
the tournament due to her bad knee few days ago.
Therefore, the only contender to deny Caroline the top ranking is another lesser famous named, Vera Zvonareva, nevertheless an immensely talented player from Russia who also made her way into the finals of both Wimbledon and United States Open this season.
Vera must reach at least the final in Doha, with three victories in the round robin stage, in order to retain hopes of snatching the number one spot, however, if the Dane triumphs on two occasions she will definitely finish the season at the top on the WTA
tour.
