As this is my first clothes project, I don't know whether to draw the pattern on the top or bottom side of the fabric. What do I use if on top?

  1. Disappearing  Fabric Markers ,some will disappear in 24 hours and others with water ;)))

  2. Mark it on the back side using a fine chalk marker( many quilt shops will have them) . Then always bring your needle up from the back side for the placement. You may have to keep remarking as you work , since the chalk will rub off as you are working. Try making a template to use for remarking, if you want to have the design remain as you first had drawn it. A template will also help you identify any changes you may want to make , before you are too far to make the change.

DO NOT USE WATER SOLUBLE MARKERS! Check the care instructions and fiber content.  Many velvet fabrics are  very "fussy " fabric and can easily get water marks that are difficult to remove if not permanent.Cotton velvet is far more forgiving than some of the other fibers used. When in doubt test an small piece of the fabric, or a inconspicuous place on the garment such as the inside of the hem.
