  1. You could google (websearch) your interests, to find:

What is already known about the subject

    Experts in the field.

You could also talk to local veteranarians.

  2. Learn science.  Read.  Use proper English, including capitalization, so people will take you seriously.  Do science fair projects.  Go to that university and start talking with people.

  3. If they're at a university and you can afford it, a good way to make a favorable impression on them is to take a course they teach, do well in it, ask good questions, be interested etc.  Most academics respond more than favorably to sincere interest.  Once you are doing well, you can then ask the prof. if maybe they need a lab tech. or have any summer research openings.  Be prepared to the possibility of doing a lot of scut work at first.

Cold e-mailing someone is generally not productive.

  4. Go to the biology/chemistry dept. website for your university and look at the research that is currently being done. If anything interests you try contacting the researchers and see if they are taking research assistants. Make sure you show enthusiasm and that you have enough free time in your schedule for research. Good luck!
