Question:

Doing well, but just not happy?

i'm a student in my early 20's, i couldn't be doing better at school, or at my internship. i have great people skills, and i have no problem with intimate relationships. everything is going well in life, but i seem to be extremely stressed all the time to the point where its uncomfortable inside.

i've tried avoiding asking this question, because i thought it'll solve itself since everything is going just fine. the thing is, for the past few times that i've visited my parents, my mom has noticed this stress on me, and i just figured it might be a problem, since i had always been a happy and worry-free person.

this internal stress has been going on for a couple of years now, and i just can't pin-point what the problem might be. i'd really appreciate any sort of opinion you can give.

  1. I can only offer an opinion as I am not a qualified therapist, may I suggest you try a few things. First, take a hard look at the stress. Is it school related, choice in career related, maybe the field of study you have chosen doesn't really thrill you. Maybe you are worried about life after college. Take a look at these relevant things affecting you now since you say the problem is relative to recent events.

Next take a look at your definition of happiness. How do you define happiness? Is stress something happy people don't feel? Is it possible your present definition of happiness is based on childhood and teen years criteria and now that you are in your twenties, that mark just doesn't cut it anymore? Is it time to redefine happiness?

Sometimes it is as simple as deciding you are happy and let everything else slide away. Stress is pretty normal for a person your age, in your situation. Don't let it interfere in your decision to be happy.

    Relax, life is good.

    C'mon, don't you seeeeee?

    Everything can change, even YOU!

Just look for WHAT is missing in Your Life for You to be WHOLE

    ?!?

    :)

    P.S.

By the way, stress many time is challenging, and this is AROUSING. That's why I used to challenge my self all the time.

Lately I'd just killed the fire - what a mistake!

What is working for you? What had you mistaken? Work it out! Be your own trainer. If you don't like your self and don't accept your self, whatever the reason(s), HOW do you want to FEEL HAPPY?

Dig into your SELF and see WHAT is missing you, as you're doing now - do not avoid it, just challenge it !

  4. Stress is a common problem for us students.  I've always found that if I make myself go out and exercise (especially outdoor stuff, as the fresh air and natural light are refreshing), or do tai qi or yoga, it always helps me to get my stress out.

As for pinpointing it, could it be the responsibility you feel at school and at your internship?  Are you possibly pushing yourself too hard?  Is it guilt that you're not doing enough?  Many universities have free student counseling.  You should check into it.  It helps, and it's free.

  5. Stress is very common, but you can do things to deal with it. Do you have hobbies and regularly spend time doing things that you enjoy? Are you physically healthy- eating, sleeping and exercising well? Do you have particular things that help you deal when you're really distressed, like talking to a friend or doing deep breathing or relaxation. Do you 'let yourself of the hook' every now and then and allow yourself to be lazy for a day?
