Depends on how far you want to go in life. If you don't want to go far then no it's not important if you want to go far then yes it is.

Yes it is.

Although many folks can find alternative employment, the only way to achieve sufficient funds for most people is for them to work in a high paid job.  

Those don't come easy and the employers tend to filter applicants firstly on their ability to show they are willing and able  to learn.  Hence the importance attached to academic qualifications.
