Question:

Doing your own bankruptcy...?

I have friends that have done their own divorces. Is it possible to do my own bankruptcy? I don't think it would not be complicated... my bills are mostly medical and I live hand to mouth on cash. I do not own a home or property and I do not intend to. I just want to dig myself out of this pit and maybe put a little away for my old age. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanx in advance :)

  1. I don't know all that much about BK as far as the details in filing but I do know that I suggest you avoid it at all costs. Medical bills are a difficult debt to have b/c there is not much you can do but I would suggest to try & get a government grant to help pay off the debt. There are plenty of grants to help pay bills, rent, & food. Look into that before you try & file for BK which will be the worst thing you could do.

  2. Divorce may be worse emotionally than a bankruptcy, but I would not do it my self.

You are going to face a skilled judge and skilled attorneys who know the law inside out and can trick you into saying the wrong thing.

Don't be buying anything. I don't know what your debt looks like to what your income is to evaluate risk here.

I would go get a free initial consultation for your options.

    edit:

FYI: The #1 reason why people file for BK is due to high unpaid medical bills. They are not exempt from BK. School loans, taxes, government fines generally still have to be paid in a BK.

There is no such thing as a grant to help pay bills, rent etc. There is welfare, but that is not a grant program, it is a welfare program.
