Dolores Ruth’s Makeshift fastest in the Irish Derby
The Irish Derby is one of the most followed greyhound racing competitions on the calendar, and in reflection there was a smashing turnout at Shelbourne last night for the last session of the second round heats.
Dolores Ruth-trained Makeshift finds himself as joint favourite in the ante-post markets with Farley Blitz (5-1), after a spectacular performance in heat 15 which saw him claim the fastest time (29.56sec) of the competition and win by four lengths.
Other notable victories came from the original ante-post fancy’ PJ Fahy-trained Tyrur Big Mike, who was denied victory in the first round from last year’s English Derby hero Kinda Ready, but was impressive in picking up a victory in heat 14, clocking 29.74sec.
Last year’s Derby Plate winner’ Thurlesbeg Joker also recaptured his winning form in heat 11 when clocking 29.70secs, and looks once again to be a big threat in the competition.
The easiest victory was picked up in the opener by Paul Hennessy’s Colorful Champ, who had no trouble in landing odds of 2-7, clocking 29.80sec.
