Dolphins trade WR Camarillo to Vikings for CB Sapp
The Minnesota Vikings have acted fast since hearing the news of Sidney Rice being forced to sit out eight weeks after hip surgery. The Vikings already signed Brett Favre’s former teammate in receiver Javon Walker and they have traded for Greg Camarillo of the Miami Dolphins. In turn, the Vikings sent cornerback Benny Sapp to South Beach.
Camarillo is coming off a season in which he caught 50 passes for 552 yards with no touchdowns. The 28-year-old’s best season came in 2008 when he caught 55 passes for 613 yards and two touchdowns. The good news for Camarillo now is that he’ll get to play with one of the game’s all-time greats in Favre.
"In the NFL, you have to be ready for trades at any time," Camarillo's agent, J.R. Rickert said. "This is a great opportunity for Greg to play with one of the best quarterbacks ever."
The Vikings receiving corps has been depleted from injuries. On top of Rice’s hip surgery, Percy Harvin has been battling migraine problems throughout training camp. The Vikings need a healthy offence to maximize Favre’s effectiveness.
Camarillo’s highlight catch of his career came in 2007. With the Dolphins at 0-13, Camarillo caught a pass in stride and went 64 yards for the game-winning touchdown in overtime to get the Fins their first and only win of the season.
Camarillo works primarily out of the slot and is regarded as a good possession receiver. He was the Dolphins’ leading receiver in 2008, but the Dolphins acquired their number one receiver in Brandon Marshall this offseason.
"Yeah, it's crazy. I hate to be rude but I don't have time for interviews. I have to move my whole life," said Camarillo when asked about the trade.
Sapp has worked in a backup role mostly at cornerback and plays special teams. He did play in seven games last year, recording 55 tackles, three for losses and seven passes defended. He also forced two fumbles and started in both playoff games for Minnesota last year.
