Question:

Domain Name Question?

I have a web server on my home pc. Currently, you can get to my site by typing in the IP address of the computer, then the directory path and the html file to be viewed. In the past, when I have purchased a domain name, I have used domain redirection. That is to say, I have set the address of the domain to the path of the html file using the the IP address, directories, and file name. How can I set up my domain so that when I type in example.com, it opens example.com/home.html. This is a bit convoluted, but I want the domain to initially open the homepage, but really point to the directory it is in. Does this make sense? If not, please make a note.

Thank you!

  1. I'm confused.  Just set the CNAME record in the DNS at the registrar you bought the domain from to point to your IP.  Then when they type www.whatever.com it will be just like they entered your IP.  If you want the root of your site to be different, setup a virtual domain in your http server.
