ok, if you bought a domain from 1and1 and the package you get says you get 2 domains...if you you were to switch hosts, would you still have 2 domains?

Yes you will still have the domain names in your possession. If you plan you transfer you'll need to do a few things first.

You'll need to set the domains to an unlocked status and write down the EPP code for each domain name, both are provided by 1and1.

Then you'll need to transfer the domains on whoever's site your moving to. I use namecheap. When transferring domain names you will usually have to pay the full purchase price and your domain name will be renewed, Extending the expiration date.

Then after a few emails and verification processes, usually from both parties, your domains will be transferred after a week or so. Give or take.

it used to be that web hosts sold you domain names in order either to sell you hosting and the $ 25 user fee

Now you buy the domain names at one host and host your domains elsewhere

Its most economical ( can choose inexpensive self serve automated companies like 1 and 1) and the domains are all in one control panel

You point the domain to hosting either by a forward or changing the dns at 1and 1 to point to the new hosting site

Its called propogating the dns and may take several days until the dns works it way over to point to the new site

yes, you can have the domain transferred.  Talk to you domain registar and your new host for this transition.
