Domenico Pozzovivo wins the stage 8 of the Giro d’ Italia 2012
Domenico Pozzovivo of Team Colnago-CSF Inox bagged his first victory at the Italian Grand Tour after his splendid performance during the stage 8 of the event.
The Italian rode brilliantly during the 229 kilometre race and occupied the top spot with an impressive time of 6 hours, 6 minutes and 5 seconds.
Benat Intxausti Elorriaga of Team Movistar finished 23 seconds behind and occupied the second position with Joaquim Rodriguez of Team Katusha achieving further 4 seconds behind at the third spot.
Thomas De Gendt of Team Vacansoleil-DCM finished at the fourth spot with Dario Cataldo of Team Omega Pharma-Quickstep and Damiano Caruso of Team Liquigas-Cannondale achieving the fifth and the sixth spots in the respective order.
Domenico was over the moon after the stage victory and told Rai.Tv, “This seems like a dream, it’s my first win in the Giro, which was a feat that seemed”.
“I was never likely to achieve! I couldn’t give any more in the final two kilometres. But I felt it was going to be my day and it was”.
He was hugely supported during the event and thanked his fans throughout the first week of the race.
Pozzovivo briefed, “I knew that I would have a lot of fans on the climb and I attacked where a lot of them were gathered”.
“This stage was very close to my heart, as it is not far from my home,” he concluded.
The 29-year-old opened his 2012 winning account with a stage 3 victory at the Giro del Trentino and also achieved the first overall spot after the final general classifications.
Stage 3 classifications leader, Ryder Hesjedal achieved the 11th spot during the event and maintained his overall dominance.
The Canadian is now holding the top overall spot after the stage 8 with a solid lead of 9 seconds over Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver of Team Katusha and 15 seconds over Paolo Tiralongo of Team Astana.
Hesjedal is positive to continue his dominance at the pink jersey for the coming stages of the Italian race.
He is now targeting the 171 kilometre stage 9 of the race scheduled between Sannio to Frosinone on May 14th, 2012.
