Domestic Worker?

We will be moving to Sydney soon as my husband just got offered a new job. I would like to take my filipino maid with us as she is very good with my 10 months old daughter and household chores. I am not sure if the Australian govt will allow us to employ or sponsor her to come over. Any advice?

  1. The Australian government will not allow you to bring your maid as she is not a skilled worker and would not be able to get a visa. Even if you somehow managed to get a visa for her, you would have to pay her a lot more than I expect you are currently paying. Australia has minimum wages regulations for all workers and there is no special category for maids or other household workers. Very few people in Australia have live in help of any kind.

  2. Are you an Australian citizen?  If not, then you will not be able to sponsor her application.  The key to getting a visa is that you need to be a "skilled" worker (doctor, nurse etc) and a maid does not fit into this category as immigration would deem that there are many Australians that would be able to perform this role.

Here is a website providing information that may assist:

    http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/index.htm

I would suggest you contact the Australian embassy or consulate where you currently are and discuss options with them.

  3. unless you have permanent resident status you can not sponsor anyone

it will be very dificult to take her with you
