Does the age when you can adopt vary per state? If so, what are the ages for Illinios, New York and Florida?

If you are single will it take longer to be picked for adoption?

Thank you so much for the help.

If you want a little girl who is either African-American,African-American mixed with another race, latina, latina mixed with another race and you want her to be 0-6 months old, about how many months would you estimate an adoption to take?

  1. Look for the "department of health and human services" or similar in your county government.  It is a myth that no infants or babies are available to adopt from foster care.  There will be someone there whose job is to recruit foster and adoptive parents - they want to meet you!

When you adopt from foster care you will get much more training and support than is available through private adoption.  The training may open your mind about what age child you would like to adopt.

There are also no costs involved in adoption from foster care, and adoptive parents of "special needs" (sibling groups, older children, most minority children) will be offered AAP (adoption assistance payments, the same as what you would recieve as their foster parent) and health insurance until the child turns 18.  These incentives are intended to provide more homes for more kids.  If nothing else, the AAP is a great way to start a college savings fund!

Friends my husband and I made in our Foster / Adoption classes had a 6 month old boy in their home about a year after they started classes.  He's 4 now, and his younger sister is a "safe surrender" baby they brought home from the hospital she was born in.

My children were placed with us, together, with one 11 years old and the other 22 months.  A bit different from most people's parenting experience, but this is mine, and I wouldn't trade.

Being single is not a barrier.  Having a good support network (helpful parent near-by, church or other community) is a help.

  2. I agree with Marie, as far as I know there are no age restrictions, as long as you are legally an adult.  My wife and I adopted in Illinois and there is no upper restriction.  In the US the birth mother chooses the adoptive parents.  Commonly it does take longer for a single mother, but you never know what makes a birth mother tick.  Our agency told us one to two years is common, prepare for two years so you are not disappointed.

  3. Most states will allow you to adopt as long as you are 21 or older.  You do have to be at least 25 for an international adoption.   Yes, it will probably take longer for you to be chosen by a birth parent if you are single.   On the plus side, it is easier to adopt a mixed race or African American child than a Caucasian infant.

  4. each state is different go online type in state your interested in and adoption that is the best way to start.  BEing single also depends on states and agencies
