Dominic Thiem downs Oriol Batalla to move into the Boys’ Singles semi-final – French Open 2011
Fourteenth seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem dumped Spanish qualifier Oriol Roca Batalla in straight sets to advance into the semi-finals of the Boys’ Singles at the Roland Garros 2011, a major clay court tournament held in Paris,
France. He registered a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the 18-year-old Spaniard on Thursday.
The rising Austrian star made a heavy impact after entering court two of Stade Roland Garros. World number 891, Thiem triumphed over Batalla, world number 1142, in one hour and fifteen minutes to book a spot in the last four.
17-year-old Austrian confidently stepped on the French clay and smoothly held entire serves with exquisite forehands from his arsenal of skills. Despite clobbering a drastic first serve share of 35 percent as compared to Batalla’s
48 percent, he converted two out of five breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to bag the opener with a convincing 6-3 score line. In addition to this, Thiem faced zero breakpoint and netter thirty-two points.
The seeded Austrian boy improved his winning ways into the final set and quickly reeled off his all six serves. In addition to this, Thiem converted both breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to edge the set with a 6-2 win.
He clobbered 50 percent first serve share which was still lower when compared to Spaniard’s 65 percent but Thiem registered a spectacular 80 percent win on it.
The Austrian is in superb form at this second of the four Grand Slam event and has yet to lose a set. He trashed British Kyle Edmund, American Mitchell Krueger and stunned the third seeded Slovak Filip Horansky all in straight
sets.
Up next for Thiem is the Croat Mate Delic who downed Serbian qualifier Miki Jankovic in straight sets.
Delic saved both breakpoints in the first set and converted two out of six breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to seal the opener with a 6-2 success in thirty-two minutes.
He carried his winning momentum into the final set and after exchanging an early break, the Croat converted another breakpoint opportunity to his advantage to seal the set by winning seven games to five.
