Dominican Edwin Rodriguez collects unanimous decision win over American Donovan George – Boxing news
It seems that Ronnie Shield was absolutely right about his pupil, Edwin Rodriguez, since in the co-main event of HBO’s Saturday March 17, 2012 pay-per-view, the Dominican lad applied his defensive game plan effectively and collected an emphatic unanimous
decision over the powerful knockout specialist Donovan George.
The event, promoted by Lou DiBella’s DiBella Entertainment, was headlined by the championship bout between Sergio Martinez and Matthew Macklin. The ring for the extravaganza was stretched at Madison Square Garden situated in New York, United States.
The ‘World Boxing Championship’ show put forth the boxing fanatics an impressive brawling experience and though the Edwin-Donovan duo did not display their power-filled aggressive game yet the two young lads did win the sold-out crowd’s praise.
Donovan, infamous as ‘Da Bomb’, has been in a total 24 bouts and came out victorious in 22. He has collected a huge 19 wins by knockout and is known as the best lethal jabber in the super middleweight division.
George was coming from a knockout win over Maxell Taylor, a bout in which he captured the vacant USBA super middleweight gold. Edwin, 26, also known as ‘La Bomba’, on the other hand, was entering in his career’s 21st bout with a long undefeated win streak.
The 10-round bout commenced and from the very beginning the formerly aggressive Edwin started to move within the ring with great agility and evaded direct contact with Donovan. Edwin swiftly ducked, blocked, and defended his face and body from George’s lethal
weapon, the right hand powerful jab.
Rodriguez continued to throw well-calculated fists that connected Don’s face and body eventually making him frustrated in the last rounds. Don, who is well known for his straight forward attacking stance, did throw powerful left and right hooks but was unable
to inflict substantial damage.
It was this reason why George’s corner men advised him to collect a knockout as soon as possible since he was lagging behind on all the three scorecards. At the end of the 10th round, Edwin, who was using his vast reach efficaciously, collected a score of
91-99, 93-97, and 94-96 from all the three designated judges.
After the bout the contended Edwin commented, “I feel great, a little tired, but happy. I don't think I need to go out there and throw bombs for three minutes each round. I still need to improve, but overall I was pleased with my performance.”
The unfortunate Don who collected his career’s second defeat, remarked, “He didn't want to fight me. I couldn’t catch him. He kept running. He had a game plan and he stuck to it. The game plan was to box and he did a good job. It was like a track meet. I
came to fight.”
Edwin now boasts a 21-bout win streak and Donovan has 22 wins, two defeats, and one drawn in a total 25 brawls.
