Dominican Javier Fortuna to defend undefeated streak against Mexican Cristobal Cruz – Boxing News
Javier Fortuna, the current WBC Youth Intercontinental featherweight champion, will defend his undefeated streak against yet another experienced pugilist, the Mexican proud Cristobal Cruz, former IBF featherweight champion, in a 10-round bout to be held
on July 6, 2012.
The duo will meet at the ring set up at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino situated in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The event is being jointly organised and promoted by Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions and Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing LLC.
The pay-per-view will be televised live on ESPN2’s Friday night boxing show ‘Friday Night Fights’ and the above duo will headline the showdown. The event will also witness Magomed Abdusalamov take on Maurice Byarm in a 10-round bout with WBC United States
(USNBC) Silver heavyweight title up for grabs.
Javier recently gave a detailed interview and shared his thoughts about the upcoming bout and the importance of grabbing a win over Cruz. Fortuna, 22, has been in a total of 20 bouts and boasts an undefeated streak.
The young lad has never lost even a single bout and in a very short career has secured 13th place in the World Boxing Organisation’s rankings. The southpaw lad has grabbed some impressive wins over ace pugilists and is coming off a first round technical
knockout win over Yuandale Evans.
His opponent, Cruz, seriously overshadows Javier by his experience. Cristobal, 35, has been in a total of 56 bouts. The veteran Mexican has collected 23 of his 39 wins by knocking the opponent out cold and is considered as a decent pugilist with explosive
knockout power.
Unfortunately, Cruz, also known as ‘Lacandon’, is going through a tough phase of his career and was unable to grab even a single win in his last four bouts. Moreover, Cruz collided with Juan Carlos Burgos in his last bout but unfortunately things did not
go well and Cristobal not only lost the bout but also the chance to grab the WBC Silver super featherweight gold.
During the media interaction, Javier commented that the bout is a significant one for him. Fortuna, also known as ‘El Abejon’, stated, “All the fights are difficult and all opponents go into the ring to beat you. I feel good because since my last fight I
have continued to train hard. The only confidence I have is that I train really hard. I beat an undefeated fighter and that just made me keep working hard and want it even more.”
When asked as to how he feels about Cruz, Fortuna stated, “Like all Mexican fighters, he's strong and comes forward, but we are prepared for everything,” adding, “A victory would mean that I'm ready for big things and big fights against the world champions.”
The bout will definitely be a huge test for the Dominican lad as Cristobal will try to take Javier as an opportunity for making a comeback on the win track.
