Dominican Republic sweeps Canada in a Pan American Cup match – Volleyball news

A Group A match of the Men's VII Pan American Cup took place between the Dominican Republic and Canada on Tuesday, July 10, 2012. The matches are being held in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic where the Ricardo Arias sports hall is staging the contests.
A total of 800 spectators watched the show as their home team made a clean sweep over the Canadians to earn a win.
It took the Dominican Republic one hour and 25 minutes to win the match at the following final set scores: 25-23, 25-20 and 25-17.
The coach of the home team, Osiel Vasquez, expressed himself by giving the following statements about the win his team achieved, “They starred in an excellent match and the future will give these young players plenty to do in the NORCECA area and worldwide,
but my boys carried out properly the theoretical study of the game, met the tactical discipline and we motivated them to get the victory.”
On the other hand, the Canadian coach Lawrence McKay, shared his views by making the following comments, “It was an honour to play with the Dominicans at their home, that fact is always good because the game is handled differently. We had very good moments,
but occasionally lowered the level.”
The player who was able to lead all scorers in the match was Elvis Contreras of the Dominican Republic as he tallied a total of 17 points for his side. Contreras was helped by his team mates Jose Miguel Caceres and Ernis Palomino who kept the pressure on
their opponents by putting up 14 and 12 points respectively. On the other hand, the top scorer on the Canadian side was Braden McLean with eight points.
The first set of the match started off with both the teams playing equally well as there were quite a few lead changes with the match reaching ties a couple of times. The score stayed level near the end of the frame but the home side was able to inch forward
with the lead and eventually bag the opening set of the match at 25-23.
The second set started off with the Canadians taking the lead and stretching the advantage but before they could get away, the Dominican Republic was able to swing things in their favour and grab the lead. Once they had the lead, they did not let it go while
the Canadians kept trailing behind. As a result, the home team secured the second set at 25-20.
The Canadians lost confidence after the loss of the first two sets and they only put in a half hearted effort in the third one which enabled the Dominican Republic to come out strong and storm towards a comfortable win at 25-17 that also sealed the deal
on the match.
