The first match of the XI Women’s Pan American Cup took place between the Dominican Republic and Colombia on Friday, July 12, 2012. The contest is being hosted by Ciudad Juarez of Mexico with the venue of the competition being the University of Ciudad Juarez
Gym. The opening match of the championship was viewed by a total of 300 spectators that saw the Dominican Republic make a clean sweep over Colombia.
Dominican Republic took an hour and ten minutes to secure three consecutive sets at the following final set scores: 25-13, 25-18 and 25-11.
The coach of the Dominican Republic squad, Marcos Kwiek, shared his views on the outcome of the match by giving the following comments, “We have different conditions in terms of preparation because we also face different situations. One of them is the preparation
to Olympic Games.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Colombian team, Mauro Marasciulo, expressed himself by making the following statements, “We are preparing in this tournament for the South American championships, and thus we have combined young girls with the most experienced
ones.”
The player who was able to register the most points in the match was the captain of the Dominican Republic squad, Prisilla Rivera, who tallied 17 points in all. Rivera was helped by her team mate Brayelin Martinez who made her presence felt by adding 11
points. On the Colombian side, the most active players were Maria Martínez and Diana Arrechea each of whom put up six points for their side.
The first set of the match started off with both the sides coming out strong but eventually the Dominican Republic pushed ahead with a lead. The Colombians kept on the chase but they could not make the score level while the Dominican Republic kept on increasing
the gap till they had propelled themselves forward to secure the opening set of the match at 25-13.
The loss of the first set made the Colombians fight harder in the second set and they were able to get the advantage at the beginning. Before long, the Dominican Republic snatched the lead but before they could increase the gap, the Colombians took the advantage
back. The Dominican Republic eventually pushed ahead again and once they had the advantage, they were able to speed off towards another set win at 25-18.
The loss of the first two sets had a dampening effect on the spirits of the Colombian players who only put in a half hearted effort in the third set. Therefore, it was not a hard task for the Dominican Republic to get themselves a lead early on and extend
the gap. The Colombians could not do much except to trail behind till the Dominican Republic squad had grabbed itself the third set of the match comfortably at 25-11.
