Dominican Republic wins the quarterfinal against Peru – Volleyball News
Women’s volleyball teams from Dominican Republic and Peru came into contest in the second quarter-final match of the Pan American Cup on Wednesday, July 18. Dominican Republic overpowered Peru by posting 25-17, 25-17, and 25-20 on board.
The match was played at the Gimnasio COBACH in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and around 2,700 spectators witnessed the thrilling volleyball action. Victory enabled Dominican Republic to claw its way to the semis of Pan Am Cup. Moreover, the DR squad also earned a ticket to the 2013 FIVB World Grand Prix.
In this regard, the mentor of Dominican Republic team Marcos Kwiek stated: “We achieved our top goal here which was qualifying to the World Grand Prix. It was the second match for Bethania and we are getting her into rhythm.”
Ambitious Dominican Republic players jumped out of the gate and quickly pikced up lead at the first technical timeout. Annerys and Elisa served with power, which helped Dominican Republic to stay ahead of Peru. As the game progressed, Peruvian ladies suffered more setbacks and eventually dropped the first stanza with a deficit of eight points.
The second frame also had some sort of symmetry with the previous set. Dominican Republic led the scores for better time and did not allow Peru to come out of the blues. The ball frequently landed on Peruvian side and allowed Dominican Republic to win the second set.
With two sets in hand, Dominican Republic was totally in shape to finish the match in straight sets. Carla Rueda of Peru put in great effort and tried to break the tempo of opponents. However, DR did not slow down and successfully covered the length of third set. Peru dropped the decision after losing three sets in a row.
Three Dominican Republic players went into double digits, while Peru had only one player with the double-figure score. Annerys Vargas of Dominican Republic was declared the top-scorer of the match with 16 points, whereas Carla Rueda emerged as the top-scorer on Peru’s side with 13 points.
“Dominican Republic is one of the favorites to win the tournament. We are still alive in the competition for the South American’s berth to the World Grand Prix,” said Peru’s Edwin Jimenez after the match.
“It was a good game but we have to put it in the past and prepare for tomorrow’s match,” Prisilla Rivera was happy about the match result, but she looked more concerned about the next match against United States. The second semi-final match on Thursday will feature Dominican Republic and the United States. Check back to find out the winner of semis of the XI Women’s Pan American Cup.
