Dominik Hasek wants an NHL comeback but Buffalo Sabres decline -NHL Free Agency Update
Dominik Hasek left the National Hockey League (NHL) after the 2007-2008 regular season with Detroit Red Wings and has now announced that, he wants to make a comeback into the North American major league, but unfortunately for the player, the Buffalo Sabres have declined his request of signing him onto the club.
It was reported that Hasek was in contact with the Buffalo Sabres and would like to make a comeback with them for the upcoming 2012-2013 regular season, but seeing their goalie capacity, general manager Darcy Regier had to decline on that part.
Regier also mentioned that he and coach Lindy Ruff were in contact with the team’s former star goaltender, but since they already have Ryan Miller and Jhonas Enroth covering the net, a third goalie is out of the question for now.
"One thing I am sure of: [Hasek] has no doubt in his mind that he can play," Regier told reporters Thursday night. "I think it probably gives him a little bit of lift seeing somebody like [Martin] Brodeur play at 40 in the Stanley Cup final. I know better than to question Dom's desire and his ability. Unfortunately, it's not something that was going to fit here."
If Buffalo had the capacity, there would have been no issue in signing Hasek for another season in the NHL by the looks of how Lindy Ruff praised the veteran.
"The conversation with Dom puts a smile on your face," Ruff said. "He's a competitor. He was great for us when he was here. He's got this desire to play. He didn't play last year. The conversation was great. We talked at length about getting ready and what it would take to get ready."
Hasek was picked up by Chicago Blackhawks as the 199th overall during round-ten of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. The veteran has spent many seasons in the league including time with Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators.
He has a total of 735 games played in the NHL under his belt with an accumulated .922 save percentage and 2.20 goals-against average.
It will definitely be exciting to see Dominik Hasek make a comeback in the league, but there is no telling as of yet if he will be able to secure a contract anytime soon.
