Dominik Meffert beats Richard Berankis 6-4, 7-5
German Dominik Meffert, ranked 213th in the world, upset twelfth seed Richard Berankis of Lithuania in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 in the second round of the qualifying draw at the US Open in New York on Thursday. The match
lasted for one hour and 38 minutes.
Meffert made a great start as he broke the Lithuanian in the first and third game of the opening set, holding both of his service games to grab a 4-0 lead. Berankis won three games in a row after that, breaking the German in the
sixth game and winning his serve in the next game to reduce the trail to 4-3. However, he failed to pull the second break back, losing the set 4-6.
Berankis hit the initial blow in the second set as he broke the German in the fourth game and consolidated on it to race to a 4-1 lead. Meffert broke back in the seventh game and held his serve in the next game, levelling the score
at 4-4. The German broke again in the eleventh game and served out the set at 6-5.
The German is drawn to face Robert Farah of Colombia in the final round of the qualifying draw.
Guillaume Rufin defeats Rhyne Williams 6-2, 7-5
World number 215 Guillaume Rufin of France moved a step closer to the main draw as he overcame American Rhyne Williams in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 in the second round qualifier. The French took an hour and 42 minutes to oust his
opponent.
Rufin came roaring into the match as he claimed first three games, breaking the American in the second game and holding his next service game to take a 3-0 lead. Williams broke back in the fifth game to reduce the deficit to 2-3
but he failed to hold his serve again in the next game, taking the score to 2-4. Rufin broke the American once more in the eighth game to claim the set 6-2.
The French and Williams exchanged double break of serve in the first six games to equalise the score at 3-3. Rufin and the American held their serve in the next five games to take the score to 6-5 in the former’s favour. The French
clinched the decisive break of serve in the twelfth game to capture the set 7-5.
Rufin is slated to take on unseeded Malek Jaziri of Tunisia in the final qualifier.
