Dominik Meffert overcomes Rik De Voest to reach the semi-finals – Heilbronn Open 2012 CH
Local qualifier, Dominik Meffert, registered a convincing victory over the unseeded South African opponent, Rik De Voest, in the quarter-final battle of the Heilbronn Open on Friday. The 171st ranked German took just
65 minutes to wrap up the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to book a berth in the semi-final round of the event.
Being a part of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour swing, the competition was played on the outdoor hard courts of Heilbronn, Germany, with the home favourite competitor prevailing. The 30-year-old Meffert
faced limited resistance from his bleak opponent and cruised through the two sets to claim a comprehensive victory. He delivered 68 per cent of his first serve on target and won 24 out of 34 points on it to get the better of his opponent.
Meffert crafted three break opportunities in the match and converted all of them en route to victory. De Voest, on the other hand, had four different break opportunities in the match but he squandered three of them to remain at
a disadvantage in the contest. Silly errors committed at the most crucial moments of the match proved too taxing for the South African, driving him out of the competition.
A steady start was witnessed in the first set, with both men holding on to their serve in the opening five games. De Voest frittered away three vital break chances in the first and third game of the set but Meffert quickly capitalized
the one he got in the sixth game. He broke his opponents serve to gain a 4-2 lead and then went on to close out the set at 6-3. Meffert carried on his wining momentum in the next set and nailed two more break points to wind up a convincing victory at 6-4.
Meffert will feature an all-German affair in the semi-final round, facing-off against the unseeded compatriot, Bjorn Phau, for a place in the final. Phau posed a dominating performance against Martin Klizan, beating the Slovakian
in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, in the quarter-final round of the Heilbronn Open on Friday. The two Germans will go one-on-one against each other on Saturday, with the winner getting a title shot in the final of the Challenger tournament.
The other Semi-final match will be played between the second seeded home favourite, Cedrik-Marcel Stebe and the Belgian qualifier, Ruben Bemelmans, on Saturday. Stebe was successful against the sixth seed Michael Berrer, 6-1, 6-4,
whereas Bemelmans dumped the amazing Canadian competitor, Vasek Pospisil, 7-6(1), 6-3, in the quarter-finals to reach the round of four in Heilbronn.
