Dominika Cibulkova defeats Yaroslava Shvedova in 2nd round – Hansol Korea Open 2011
Number four seeded and wildcard entrant Dominika Cibulkova clashed against qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova in the second round match of the Hansol Korea Open 2011. Battling it out for one hour and nineteen minutes of the match Slovak
Cibulkova won with a 7-6(4), victory as Shvedova had retired.
Opting to serve first was Shvedova as she had just won the pitch. The two players won on their service games in the first two games and were able to place themselves on the score board. During the following two games the players
broke each other back to back and rounded the score to 2-all.
Subsequently, in the next six games the players had volleyed long and neither of the players wanted the other to take a competitive edge over the other. By the end of the tenth game the score had equalized to 5-5.
At such a pivotal stage in the game the match could’ve gone either way and in the last two games as Cibulkova broke Shvedova, she took a mini lead of 6-5. However, Shvedova called for an examiner and though in pain, she kept on
playing and even went on to breaking her opponent in the twelfth game to push it into a tie breaker.
The Kazakh continued her fight against the Slovak well into the tiebreaker. Going toe-to-toe with the rising Slovakian star, Shvedova matched blow for blow as she kept the score tied for the first six points. However, a mini-break
for the Slovak came at the eighth point when she forced an error from her opponent to go 5-3 in the score, extending it to 6-3 moments later on her serve. From there on the pair successfully held their individual serves; as Cibulkova served out the set with
a powerful winner down the line, clinching a 7-4 tiebreaker victory.
During the break Shvedova decided not to play any further as she was in a lot of pain and retired from the match, handing the game to Cibulkova.
Cibulkova was able to secure a place in the second round of the event and will now be facing Slovenian Polona Hercog.
