Dominika Cibulkova devastates Iryna Bremond and flies away in round two - Barcelona Ladies Open 2012
World number 17, Dominika Cibulkova, thrashed the French professional, Iryna Bremond, in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 to progress into the second round of the Barcelona Ladies Open on Tuesday. She just took 51 minutes to put aside the
131st ranked French who looked completely down and out.
First set was a bagel and took 18 minutes to finish. Some people were still moving into the arena and advancing towards their seats. They had already missed the opening set proceedings that portrayed shear class and domination
from the third seed Slovak. She was absolutely terrific with her forceful forehand and backhand returns making her competitor’s life as hard as she could.
Bremond witnessed the most terrible start to her clay season. She only won five points in the first set compared to 24 of her opponent. No point was won on the first serve and only a single point was bagged in the second serve.
It was the most miserable performance by anyone at any elite platform.
Some respect was restored in the second set when both players broke serve in the third and fourth game to push the scores at 2-2. Bremond looked a lot better in the second half and registered the second serve hold; progressing
toe-to-toe with her opponent to 3-3.
However, the cameo from the French was soon over and Cibulkova took over the control of the match. She broke serve in the ninth game to take the lead of 5-3 and won the following four points to pass the first round stage of the
tournament in grand fashion.
Bremond left the arena with frustration on her face. No one was expecting such a devastating performance from the third seed Slovak who recently suffered from a niggling right shoulder injury. However, it was the poorest of the
days in the career of the French and she would like to forget it as soon as possible.
Cibulkova will square-off against the winner of the match between the French qualifier, Laura Thorpe, and the Czech Republic representative, Klara Zakopalova. Thorpe is in exciting form so a possible upset is on the cards.
