Dominika Cibulkova edges Bojana Jovanovski in round two – US Open 2012
World number 14, Dominika Cibulkova, ousted the 72nd ranked Serb, Bojana Jovanovski, in the second round contest of the US Open at New York. However, the scores didn’t do justice to the 20-year-old Serb who lost two
tie-breaker rounds in a row 6(3)-7, 6(3)-7; definitely deserved to have another shot at the third round spot.
The 23-year-old Slovak opened up the proceedings but to her discomfort, her serve was broken in the first game. However, she recovered instantaneously to win a breakpoint back and recovered the trail. Both players held their respective
serves in the following three games that pushed the scores to 3-2 in favour of the Slovak.
Cibulkova continued to impress and broke serve to take a lead at the crucial stage of the set. It was obvious that the 20-year-old Serb will not stay back and try her best to diminish the trail. In a ‘do or die’ game, Jovanovski
broke serve to keep the set alive and held her serve in the following game to level the scores at 5-5.
The following two games witnessed no drama at all and the tie-breaker round was enforced to separate the two equally matched players. The experience of the Slovak helped her to post an early mini-break and from that stage, the
Serb looked mediocre and couldn’t hang on for long. However, the opening set was an absolute treat to watch for everyone at the arena and those glued to the television screens.
Jovanovski commenced the second set with a serve hold and so did her rival. However, quick flurries of breakthroughs were witnessed at the hard courts of New York that allowed the Slovak to take a lead of 3-2; winning two of the
three breakthroughs contested. The lead was kept intact until the 14th ranked Slovak entered a stage where she was serving for the match.
Out of nowhere, the 72nd ranked Serb fought back and posted a vital breakthrough that levelled the scores at 5-5. Once again, both players managed to hang on to their serves and enforced another tie-breaker round into
play. Unfortunately for Jovanovski, she fell short of expectations again and allowed Cibulkova to book a date with Roberta Vinci.
