Dominika Cibulkova ousts Stefanie Voegele to reach quarters in Stanford – Tennis News
Slovakian beauty, Dominika Cibulkova, stomped over the Swiss challenger, Stefanie Voegele, in straight sets at the Bank of the West Classic 2013 on Thursday. She penned down a 7-5, 7-6(5) victory against the Swiss to book a place in the final eight at this
WTA Premier event taking place in Stanford, United States of America.
Seeded third in this event, Cibulkova dusted away late resilience posed by the Swiss and eventually earned the limelight. The challengers previously met each other at the US Open and after securing this victory, she maintained her winning record.
The Slovak commented in a courtside interview after earning the glory, "I expected a really tough match, because she's playing really well right now. I played her a long time ago. I remember she plays close to the lines. I knew it would be a tough match.
It could have been an easier match for me though - I was 5-2 up first set and 5-2 up second set - but in the end I always made it, and even though it could have been easier, I'm still happy with the win. I'm really happy to be in the quarters and hopefully
I'll continue to play well tomorrow."
Cibulkova made a sloppy entry and suffered the first blow in the opening game to trail at 0-1. However, she reeled off four straight games and got the upper hand. Regardless of losing her edge in the ninth game, the Slovak got the breakthrough in the last
game and clicked the opener with a 7-5 win.
Ranked 25th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Cibulkova carried her momentum in the proceeding set. She drew the first blood in the fourth game and jumped to a 4-1 lead. The Slovak lost her lead in the ninth game but stayed focused and dragged the
set to a tie-breaker. She edged past her opponent in it and sealed the set with a 7-6(5) win.
The fourth seed, Jamie Hampton, also stole the show and progressed at this event. She clobbered a 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3 victory against the former college tennis star, Nicole Gibbs.
