Dominika Cibulkova slays Lourdes Dominguez-Lino - Federation Cup World Group Play-Offs
World number 17, Dominika Cibulkova, slaughtered the 31-year-old Spaniard, Lourdes Dominguez-Lino, in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 to give Slovakia 1-0 lead against the Spanish squad in the Federation Cup play-offs.
Lino lost the first game of the match and went down 0-2 upfront. Both players were eager to hold on to their serves in the following games of the set and restrained their counterparts from breaking serve for five games.
However, the Slovak broke the shackles and spared just one point for her opponent before registering the second breakthrough of the match. She was looking threatening and was already in great form having played the final of the
Barcelona Ladies Open, earlier this month.
Cibulkova started the second set in emphatic fashion having won 10 out of 12 points played in the first two games to take a lead of 2-0. She repeated the same phenomenon in the following four games and registered a thumping bagel.
It was a commanding display from the beauty starlet of Slovakia who wasted no opportunity at all to slay her opponent throughout the match.
It was the second embarrassing defeat for the 104th ranked Spaniard who lost the first head-to-head in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. It was the third round of the US Open and Lino was in good form having made it this far from
the qualifying stage of the tournament.
Spain was expected to lose miserably against the talented Slovakian squad but these kinds of embarrassing defeats will lower the confidence of other players who will be playing the rest of the matches. Lino was the leading representative
so this might prove to be a major disaster for the team.
In another tie, American booming starlet, Christiana McHale outfoxed the Ukrainian tennis ace, Lesya Tsurenko, in a gruelling three-setter; winning the contest 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. World number five, Samantha Stosur, gave lead to the
Australia after winning the match against the German tennis icon, Angelique Kerber. It was a much needed win for the Aussie team who needs Stosur to step up and thump the Germans to boost the morale of the rest of the team members.
