Dominika Cibulkova upsets Francesca Schiavone in 2nd round – China Open 2011
The first upset of the second round was when Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova dismantled the seventh seeded Francesca Schiavone at China Open 2011. The players took up racquets on the outdoor hard courts of the National Tennis Center in Beijing, China. After
simply one hour and fifteen minutes Cibulkova was able to flabbergast the seventh seeded Italian in straight sets of 6-2, 6-2.
The court was set and the two players walked on to the court. After winning the service toss, Schiavone opted to serve first but was unable to hold on to her service game and slipped. Cibulkova on the other hand, capitalized on the breakpoint and as she
held serve on her service game, it was only the Slovak to be found on the scoreboard leading with a 2-0.
In the following four games the players held serve and even though, Schiavone tried to reduce the deficit she was unable to do so. By the end of the sixth game the score rolled at 4-2, two games away, Cibulkova shifted to high speed and capitalized on the
second breakpoint opportunity and was only a game away. She held serve in the last game and restricted her adversary to only two games out of the eight played and in doing so she clogged the opening set.
Schiavone again tried her hand at opting first in the second set but again was unable to hold, resulting in a bad start and by the end of the first two games, it was only Cibulkova to be found on the scoreboard at 2-0. In the following two games the players
held serve and the scoreboard rolled over to 3-1.
In the fifth game Schiavone had double faulted during the second serve and endorsed a game to Cibulkova, who was now leading with a 4-1. Although, Schiavone tired to reduce the deficit, it proved to be futile. In the last three games, Cibulkova was able
to hold serve in the seventh and so was Schiavone, who just won her second game in the entire set. As Cibulkova served for the match in the second set, she conquered and sealed her victory by smashing a crosscourt shot.
Cibulkova managed to secure a spot in the third round of the event.
