Question:

Don't laugh (out loud), but can you help me make coffee?

So I've never made coffee before, but I was given a nice coffeemaker for renewing my apartment lease, so I figured I'd give it a shot. First of all, the coffeemaker says to use 1 & 1/2 tablespoons of ground coffee for (2) 5-oz cups of coffee, but the coffee (Millstone) says to use 1 tablespoon per 6 oz cup of coffee. Yeah. That's helpful, huh?

I tried the Mr. Coffee method, and it tasted like 6 different kinds of yuck at the same time, and it's supposed to be Raspberries N Cream.

Any ideas?

  1. did you try the other way (millstone?) also, maybe its the brand of the coffee or the flavor (raspberry cream? blech!)

  2. if you want better tasting coffee then coffee shops here it is take a pot put one cup of water 4 table spoons of milk 1 and a half tablespoons of refined sugarcane the white sugar you know and 1 and a half table spoons of fine ground coffee if its expresso ground then 1 table spoon if you want honey instead of refined sugar cane its 3 table spoons remember its leveled on the spoon not a mountain i studied coffee making so look no further this is it when you pour the coffee in the cup move the coffee in the pot around and around so the coffee goes down lift up and pour fast and slow down so the ground coffee seeds dont go into your cup and stay against the side in the pot

  3. i'm gonna assume it's a 12 cup coffeemaker because that's pretty standard i use 3 heaping tablespoon scoops (one usually comes with the coffee pot) for a whole pot & then divide it down for the amount i want. i'd suggest trying a different kind of coffee i can't imagine raspberries n' cream with coffee would taste very good...

and don't be embarrassed or sad that you can't make coffee people have problems making coffee it can be confusing.

  4. The general guidelines on the coffeemaker should always be superseded by the specific guidelines on the package of coffee which you purchased.  Each type is a little different.

Put the correct size of paper filter in the proper place in the filter basket, then put the coffee in it.  The better the water, the better the coffee.  If your local tap water is good, use it.  Otherwise, use bottled or filtered water for your coffee.  The first batch is usually pretty bad, even if you have properly washed the coffeemaker before using.  I'm guessing you read the manual, if you noted the measurement difference.  If this guess is incorrect, go read it before you try again.  The manufacturers do know how best their product should be used.

Bear in mind that the cup markings on the carafe or the water tank are for the 5 or 6 ounce cups people used to use 30 years ago.  A normal mug nowadays is 10 to 12 ounces.  Mine's 16.  Use a measuring cup to measure what your mug holds, if you're not already aware of that.  Use that to figure how many little bitty 6oz cups you'll need to make to get a mug or two of coffee.

  5. first do you even like coffee? do you like it strong or weak? if you like strong coffee put 1/2 cup in the area where your coffee filter goes put 10-12 cups of water and press start or brew or whatever.  you might like coffee creamer favors better than flavored coffee so make the strenght you like and then add a raspberry syrup and cream for flavor. good luck and by the way all coffee makers are different so you will need to get a refresher coarse if you use a different one.

  6. Every time I try to make coffee in the Mr. Coffee it tastes like burnt terds. You are not alone.

I finally gave up and bought a french press - now I can make coffee I can actually drink!

It also makes a difference if you use good coffee. Find a place where they will grind the beans for you (don't go to a chain supermarket - they just dump new beans in with the old ones and you get rancid coffee) and buy only what you think you'll use for the week. When beans are fresh ground, they release oils, and you can definitely taste the difference from the freeze-dried c**p.

So I didn't solve your coffee-maker problem. I'm just not qualified for that.

  7. First of all, what kind of coffee maker did you recieve?

If it is a Mr. Coffee machine it really is fairly easy to make good coffee on a routine basis.

Do you like the taste of your tap water?  If not then you need to get a filter for your water, either a Brita or Pur pitcher will work nicely.

Place a paper filter in your coffee maker in the basket provided.

Measure your coffee with the coffee scoop provided by Mr. Coffee (if available) or use a measuring spoon and measure a level tablespoon and 1/2 tablespoon for every 2 teacups (5-6 oz)  Place this in the coffee filter and spread it out so it is not in a large pile.  Sprinkle a few grains of salt on top.  Close the basket into it's recepticle.

Add cold water to the level of the number of cups of coffee you are preparing.  I generally prefer to make at least 4 cups.  This will provide you with 2 good size mugs of morning coffee.  Press your brew button and let the coffee pot do it's thing.  When finished brewing, immediately remove the coffee grounds and filter from the basket and dispose of them in your prefered method.

add your favorite flavorings, cream etc and enjoy.

I find that you can make better coffee using regular coffee and then add your flavorings to the brewed coffee.  The process of adding flavoring to coffee beans is imperfect at best and you will like the flavor much better by adding it after the brew cycle.

If you find that the coffee is bitter or overly strong cut back on the coffee by a little until you find the exact amount that you prefer.

Oh, by the way, you can purchase a coffee scoop at the store and it will measure the amount of coffee needed for 2 cups (5-6oz)  do not add extra because you are using a mug, just make more coffee by the standard measure.(think of a  fine china cup as your serving.)

Also, you can purchase whole beans and a coffee grinder so that the coffee is very fresh when you brew it.
