  1. Well, free advice is worth what you pay for it, mostly. ;o)

People like to hear themselves talk.

The truth is, homeschooling, like any other kind of schooling, has successes, failures, and a lot of stuff in the middle. It works for some families (or some children) better than for others.

I see kids on here who claim to be homeschoolers and unhappy. Well, there are lots of unhappy schooled kids, too, right? And there's no way to tell whether they'd be happier switching places, even. You just do the best you can.

I hope that the advice (such as it is) that you're getting here helps in some way, and I hope even more that you have an IRL support group for all this homeschooling business. It's a tough row to hoe, alone.

In my state there are several homeschooling groups that organize events and classes, mostly in email. We could go to an activity every day if we wanted to. That helps with the cabin fever, and answers questions about curriculum, etc. I also participate in a couple of national groups which supply support and resources. One I'd recommend is  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/UUHomescho... because they have a very relaxed and inclusive flavor, even if you're not UU (or never heard of UU's lol)

Good luck. You sound a little frazzled, and we've all been there.

  2. Yeah its ignorance, especially since I am home-schooled and I get it constantly that im anti-social and I am never going to learn socialization skills.  If you really want to hear the ironic part I actually went to real public school for preschool through 9th grade.  No I never learned social skills for those 10 years, you only learn social skills in 10-12th grade I guess.   People are just idiots ya know.  You have to just say fk em because more likely the people that say it just talk out of their butts and actually have never home schooled their own child or know anyone thats homeschooled on a close level.  They just think they know how it goes.  If you want to get real opinions from people that actually know what they are talking about get in touch with your local keystone AEA people or whatever state group is near you and ask them who else you can talk to that homeschools near you.  They will give you phone numbers.   Or even calling the public school and asking, they have to know and keep track of all the kids in the district that are not attending and are being homeschooled.

  3. I reckon they're just posting for their own benefit; talking to themselves; are sad enough to be desperate for two points.

I just ignore them...the same as I ignore anyone who talks bull$hit in the real world. They rarely if ever have any first hand experience or have bothered to do any cold, hard research; they're just running off at the mouth.

  4. just remember , we are not professionals on here, at least for the most part of us. And many on here are quite young, answering the best they can. And some are just mean.

  5. your right

  6. No, I don't hate it. I LIKE it because it proves how pathetic public school is-it hasn't even taught these people how to determine WHAT the question is, and in many cases, their grammar/punctuation/spelling are such a joke that I let the written responses of public schoolers speak for themselves! It also proves how little public school has prepared people to do actual research on a topic-many of these lesser educated public school products like to go on and on about how homeschool is only good "up to a point", and that colleges won't accept them, blah, blah, when IN FACT if they were intelligent and motivated enough to do some research they would know that statistics point to the OPPOSITE of those (and many other) stereotypes being the truth.

Poor products of public school........some of them REALLY believe that there are NO labs we use, no class settings, nothing. People who think that way are SO in the dark ages!

For the genius who thinks it's "deficient" in high school-really? Because my sons near PERFECT ACT score, and instant college acceptance seems to reflect otherwise. In fact, if you did some research, you would find that these exceptional results are TYPICAL for homeschoolers.....you know, typical like the high school drug use and dropout rates

  7. I understand what u are saying...

but I may be guilty as charged.. sorry..

    good luck....

  8. I asked a similar question last week.  I guess they're either ignorant, bored or desperate for points.  I am starting to find it amusing.

  9. Extremely irksome

  10. Because people, even ignorant people, are frequently SURE that they know the 'right' answer. And people believe that their unchallenged, unspoken assumptions are the gospel truth, because they have never spoken to anyone who disagrees with them...to the point that when you question them on something that they take for granted, they are completely unable to formulate a response because it is unfathomable that anyone would question something so 'obvious' (I'm speaking as a political and philosophical minority here...in my area, virtually everyone has the same political leanings, so when I question something, they think I'm either kidding or that I am blindly repeating something that someone they didn't like would say).

Take rhsaunders for example. He (or she) implicitly assumes that 1-public school teachers are 'experts' in their various disciplines (something that is not necessarily the case at all, as demonstrated in numerous studies), 2-homeschooling is worse for students as they get older, something that is not born out in studies of homeschooling, 3-homeschooling parents are the ONLY teachers for every subject, completely ignoring the fact that many homeschoolers get tutors, have the student take college courses, exchange teaching times with other homeschooling parents and are parts of co-ops and 4-physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, English, foreign language(s), shop and music are what high school students should primarily be learning (maybe yes, maybe no, but it is an assumption...personally, as an aspiring genetic counselor, I have forgotten nearly all of chemistry and physics, and even some of the aspects of biology having to do with things I'm not interested in, but am somewhat of an expert on genetics and evolutionary changes). He probably does not even realize that he is making assumptions, as they seem intuitively logical. This allows him to state his positions confidently as facts, without even questioning his assumptions.

  11. I hate homeschooling....

    It's horrible....

    I'm miserable....

And it's pretty much ruined my life....

    That's why....

If you get it from people who've never been homeschooled....That's one story....

    I'm homeschooled....And know what it's like....And I dislike it very much....

    =)

    -Max

  12. Just ignore those people, they obviously don't know any better.

  13. I think some people just can't help themselves. Plus they probably just want the points and being a jerk in the process makes them feel special. Never mind about those idiots. :)

  14. Your question is relevant.  However, there are definite limits to what homeschooling can accomplish: it is fine for elementary education, marginal for middle school, and deficient for high school: no homeschool teacher will simultaneously be expert in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, English, a foreign language or two, shop practice, music instruction, and several other disciplines that may be available in a public high school.

  15. I missed your question on it. But my sister-in-law is homeschooling my nephew. I'm a little familiar with it.
