Don't you think it's time they changed the name of Brownlow Medal?

The Brownlow medal?

That was for the VFL - it should not carry on into the AFL. It is no longer a Victorian competition but now Australian wide.

The Sandover Medal; the Margery Medal; the Browlow medal - they were individual state medals for the respective football leagues.

The AFL is trying to relocate teams into other states...Sydney, Brisbane & the Kangaroos for instance - once the AFL admin. acknowledge that Melbourne can't support more than a few teams & recognize other states the competition will be far better off.

Supporters who can't let go of the old VFL are living in the past!

  1. why would you.

    keep it the same!!

  2. You have to be a Melbournian to understand why I say NO to changing the name.

Mr Chas Brownlow should be respected..nothing to do with living in the past mate.

  3. no

the brownlow medal is a good name for the player of the year medal.

  4. I would like to keep "the Brownlow" because the name just sounds right but if they had to change it i would reccomend either goodes or judd but it wouldnt sound right (by the way neither Adam Goodes or Chris Judd are my favourite players so this is not favouritism) Also there should be smaller awards for the best of each position (rucks should count as midfielders cos there are only 20 good rucks) and the Brownlow should be easier to win for forwards and backs

  5. It's a fair point, however, the VFL is part of AFL history, so it might be difficult to change the name.

What names would you suggest for the changes ??

It might be hard to find a name that just represents AFL, as many past players got the start in VFL.

  6. Nah, it's a reasonable point but I'm a traditionalist and the VFL was almost always the premier football competition in Australia and certainly by the 1960's it was the one all players from all over the country flooded into Melbourne to play if they were any good.  With few exceptions it always (from then) represented the 'best and fairest' player in Australia.

The other states often won state of origins but rarely won games between WA, SA, Tas and Vic based players.

That is, it has always been the "best" player in the country.  (I'll concede there are some very few players who never played VFL who could have won it but the same applies to full forwards and ruckmen if they played as rovers!)

Besides, I think we have to b careful about throwing away tradition in the interests of some 'fairness' argument.

  7. Yes I do, change it to "best midfielder award" and then have another medal that is given to the best player regardless of what position they play.

  8. I know what you mean and you have a point, but ask anyone in AFL,players past and present ,Fans etc,the majority will vote to leave it as it is.

    It's Football history.

They have changed the game enough as it is,we don't need anymore!!!!

  9. you have made a good point... but i,d prefer it stays the same...:)

  10. The Vics wont let go of the VFL. They have resented the development of the AFL from day one. Mainly because they resent seeing the premiership cup crossing the border so often.

    C'mon the Lions!

  11. No way, It was brought up as brownlow and will stay as brownlow. Just like the Allen Border medal in Cricket.

  12. Good idea

How about the Eddie McGuire Medal?

  13. No Way, keep it the way it is now

  14. Even though I am a South Australian and love my Crows.

No, I don't think it should be changed.

There is a lot of tradition with the "Brownlow" & I'm pretty sure that which ever state you are playing for or come from, it would be an absolute honour to win it!

  15. I totally agree with you. I answered this question  a few months ago, and what you have stated...is what I mentioned in my answer. You are right.........The VFL is no longer. It is now called  AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE.

  16. Good question and you also make a valid point, however, Chas Brownlow it will be forever.

  17. Remember, the interstate teams were invited to join with the VFL teams to form the AFL, because the Brownlow was a traditional award of the VFL it was kept for the AFL, so why can't the interstate supporters just except it and get of their high horse insinuating that the AFL only favours Victorian clubs, bring some hard, defining facts to the table or shut up.
