Don't you think the Earth Hour concept is just ridiculous?

I mean look at some countries in Asia and mostly Africa where they have no power for almost 15 hours a day ,its more like they are helping indirectly without knowing. When will the hypocrites in the west and all the lobby groups understand this.

What's your view ?

Thanks.

  1. Of course it is. Most electricity is used by industrial and commercial interests. Wal Mart will will not be closing their stores. Oil pumps will go on pumping. Auto assembly will go on. Steel and other metal processing plant will keep running. And a few people sitting in the dark with a flashlight full of Vaseline will make no difference to anything.

  2. Earth hour is nothing more than a way to get well-meaning people behind a global conspiracy to contol mankind ( I mean after all, it's for Mother Earth and 'the children,' how could you argue against that!). Think about 'energy conservation' for a moment...there can be no 'energy crisis' as everything in the Universe (even you!) is made of energy! The only crisis is a crisis of imagination or a crisis of monopoly...we haven't been given reasonable alternatives because the current system rewards the hoarders that dictate our energy policies! People need to stop listening to the mainstream media and look at the REAL science behind global warming...you will find that Earth's temperature mean has actually reached a plateau since 1998, and besides that Carbon as a greenhouse gas ranks very low with man's contribution to Carbon emissions being in the low single digit percentages. Anyone notice how cold this winter was and still is? Have you looked at global weather this past year? Did you know the Earth was much warmer at various periods in history before our SUV's came along? How did those tree stumps get under those glaciers? I agree we need to curb real pollution and conserve our forests, but the fake Global Warming debate is a clever diversion. A carbon tax will not cure anything and only shows their true intent. Research Agenda 21 if you want to see their real aims. Wake up people! Demand alternative clean energy instead of punishing yourselves for the actions of the monopolistic regimes!!!

  3. It is just a cheap gimmick and will not resolve the energy and environmental issues.

  4. This GW thing is making the oil Co. rich.

  5. yes i think it is a joke because when we go to bed we turn off the power sooo thats what i mean its just a big joke

  6. It's just a way of saying, if each person chips in one little bit, it can be one great change. It's probably just a "Concept" to get people started on living green, and actually thinking about it.

  7. The fact that Earth Hour is receiving so much attention (and being talked about on Yahoo Answers!) means that it has achieved it's aim...to raise the profile of global warming. It's not about how much energy one hour of darkness will save. It's about showing solidarity in the battle to save the environment.

So I will be turning my lights off!

  8. I don't think it's ment to actually save mass amounts of energy. It's probably just another way to spread awareness for their cause.

  9. I participate 24-7-365… and have for over 10 years.  I have 5 acres in the Pacific NW woods. I don’t have a well, I collect rain and snow run off from all the buildings and store it in 1000 gallon tanks and an above ground pool for use during the summer, even supporting a small garden (30,000 gallons).  All lights (accept solar yard lights) off all night after bed time, only electric appliances are high efficiency fridge, freezer, TV, and computer.  Monthly elec bill runs under $40. Heat with wood in a high efficiency wood stove (no ash, never have to clean the chimney, never smokes).  Use 100 gallons propane a year for water heating and cooking.  I have 2 motorcycles and a 35 mpg Toyota pickup.

If everyone lived like me Exxon (don’t forget the boycott) and all the other energy hemorrhoids would have died out years ago….  The entire “energy crisis” is in fact a contrived monopoly to suck more revenue from the public.

  10. Those countries may be using small amounts of energy now but it is changing. Earth Hour is designed to promote the message to the people who are using too much energy now. It may help more people realise that:

    > in 42 years the human population will increase by 50% to 9 billion

    > in the past century the total mass of vertebrates has halved whereas the total mass of humans has quadrupled

    > if everyone used the same amount of resources as Americans we would need 5 planet Earths

    > 96% of glaciers surveyed are melting, some are gone

    > if the Himalayan glaciers melt 300 million people will have no water

    > 15% of animals are threatened with extinction today, 12% of all birds, 20% of reptiles, 23% of mammals, 31% of amphibians, and 40% of all fish

    > humans clear an area of woodland the size of Portugal every year

    > there are 800 million cars in the world today and in 23 years China will have another 1 billion cars

    > the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere today is the highest it has been for over 750,000 years

No body knows what the effects will be.

  11. Yes.

But it's a cutesy way for the libbie tree huggers to "Raise Awareness" - whatever that threadbare cliche is supposed to mean.

  12. I like it.

    I support it

  13. Overpopulation is the cause of all our environmental problems. I wonder how many babies are conceived during earth hour? Maybe we should be leaving the lights on.

  14. If you live somewhere lit only by candles, I say do what you need to survive.  Obviously we have luxuries they don't.  But a mere hour of conservation is a nice idea to show people how much little things can help.  And, hey, it's not like it's mandatory.  If you want to help conserve, do so, if not, that's your choice too.  When these things are enforced as mandatory by the government is when I think we've reached the ridiculous threshold.
