  1. Yes, that's one of the reasons that my cardiologist & dietician do not recommend that I eat them.

  2. That's why you aren't supposed to eat them morning, day and night - just like real meat. People shouldn't be eating many processed foods anyway.

Even if you have a medical condition, salt is an ESSENTIAL part of your diet and I don't put salt on everything so it's not going to hurt if I eat some fake meat once in a while. If you don't eat enough salt, your body can't make stomach acid to properly digest anything. I definitely don't recommend fake meat as a primary source of protein.

A bit of salt is nothing compared to the saturated fat and cholesterol of actual animal products.

  3. Yeah it has that much salt to give it flavor and preserve it. Most processed foods are like that. It won't harm you unless you have high blood pressure.

  4. yeah i can taste it. i dont really like that stuff, i just eat everything meat eaters eat but without the meat haha

  5. ALL processed foods have a lot of salt.  If it's more or less probably depends on the brand.  Some stores have low-sodium versions.

  6. I agree, I think with most things they are ok in moderation.

They are ok for convenience, but it is healthier to cook using fresh ingredients, I use mushrooms alot for burgers etc.

And instead of fake minced meat I use beans to make a vegan shepherds pie.

  7. yes i also think that way

  8. There is far too much salt in most processed foods. It's a cheap ingredient and it adds flavour. But it can be detrimental to health because some people ae sodium sensitive and it can contribute to problems such as high blood pressure.

A veggie burger every now and then doesn't harm you. Like Fluffycat said, veggie meats are convenience foods. They shouldn't be consumed all the time, moderation is best!

We learnt at University a method of finding the salt content. Take the sodium content, and multiply that figure by 2.5. That will give you the salt content in grams. Try to keep your daily salt intake below 6 grams (in the UK) or 4 grams in the USA. Considering a veggieburger can have on average about half a gram of salt in it, yes they are very salty!

It's much healthier to prepare your own at home. Then you can control what the ingredients are. =)
