Question:

Don Juan roses out of control!?

I live in CT. I have 2 Don Juan climbers by my front door in a garden with about 8 other variety of roses. All of them are beautiful as I have installed a weeper system around the base, they get tons of water, and are fed regularly. The Don's are going nuts! The canes are so heavy they are on the ground. Can I cut these back? I am a bit disappointed with this years flowers as they seem extra tight and don't open fully before browning. I was told that was caused by thrips, so I treated accordingly... didn't help! But what to do about these huge stalks of roses?? I'm afraid if I chop them down now, I'll be in trouble next spring?

  1. Don Juans like to sprawl and need to be trained. I finally quit and cut them way back. To my suprise, they had a second bloom. Now, I just keep them running lateral, cut back when they get to be too much and enjoy more blooms besides that

    one spring deluge.
