The inventor of Nellie Ball and soon to be Hall of Famer, Don Nelson remains adamant that he is not returning to world of basketball and is enjoying his retirement .....
Don Nelson is one of the greatest coaches to grace the NBA and his induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is a testament to that.
During his coaching tenure, Don mentored Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks and the Dallas Mavericks. But the tenure he is most famous for was with the Golden State Warriors – the team with which he ended his career. He invented
the point forward position with the Bay Area franchise and took them to their first ever playoff appearance after the Chris Mullen era.
Nelson retired as a coach in 2010, however questions regarding a comeback have surrounded him since. There have been rumours of him being linked to a coaching position with the Minnesota Timberwolves but as he gets inducted into
the Hall of Fame, Nelson remains adamant on staying away from the world of basketball.
“I’m having so much fun not coaching in a life that I didn’t know about, doing all these interesting things,” Nelson said. “I didn’t know that I was going to have so much fun not coaching. There is life after basketball. I didn’t
know that. I know it now. And I would not go back.”
Nelson has achieved much in his career. From being the face of the Boston Celtics as a player, he achieved greatness after becoming the most successful coach in the history of NBA.
In his time, Don revolutionized the game of basketball as we know it. Being regarded as one of the main people involved in the introduction of small ball, Nelson gave birth to the point forward position which has become an integral
part of teams these days.
Such is the aura of the old man, that teams around the NBA are still interested in hiring his services. Nelson however is enjoying his retirement in Maui and has no plan to make a comeback. Based on the recent comments his win-loss
record of 1,335-1,063 achieved in 31 seasons does not look to be changing anytime soon.
