Don Nelson set for an interview with Minnesota Timberwolves – NBA Update
Don Nelson is set to meet the Minnesota Timberwolves management for an interview related to the head coaching slot. The veteran coach is in town and it is believed the interview will be held on Sunday, with Timberwolves General
Manager David Kahn heavily leaning towards Nelson.
Kahn has already spoken to Nelson via telephone and the coach himself earlier expressed an interest in the job. Don Nelson is one of the stalwarts of basketball, having spent more than half his life in the NBA as a player and coach.
Don established himself as an elite player in his day and won 5 NBA World Championships with the Boston Celtics. Upon his retirement as a player, Nelson immediately entered the coaching circuit with the Milwaukee Bucks. Nelson
has coached 5 NBA teams overall in his coaching career and won NBA’s Coach of the Year award on three separate occasions.
Although Nelson’s resume is largely impressive, his most recent stints in the NBA have not gone as well as the wily old coach would have liked. In addition to that, many believe that the coach does not suit the young talented roster
that the Timberwolves possess, although he is believed to be on good terms with the franchise’s star player, Kevin Love.
Nelson is just the latest name in a string of coaches that have been linked with the Minnesota Timberwolves head coaching position. Rick Adelman and Bernie Bickerstaff are also in the picture while Terry Porter and Mike Woodson
have had interviews already.
The Timberwolves have been on the lookout for a new head coach since firing Kurt Rambis, or even before that. Rambis’ future was a foregone conclusion when the Timberwolves season ended with just 17 wins, rock bottom of the NBA.
The Phil Jackson disciple had tried and failed to bring the famed ‘Triangle Offense’ to the Timberwolves and also did not see eye to eye with Kevin Love. With the arrival of Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio, who the Timberwolves
drafted back in 2009, this summer, the management deemed that Rambis’ playing style wasn’t suited to the personnel at their disposal.
Still the coach was left to lurch in the dark for around 2 to 3 months as David Kahn made up his mind on how to fire him. Some believed that Kahn was looking to line-up a replacement before Kurt was shown the door, but the recruiting
process has only now picked up pace after his departure.
The Timberwolves fans will be hoping the long wait over the identity of the new coach is over soon so that they can look forward to a promising new season after years of doom and gloom.
