Donald Cerrone can get a UFC Lightweight title match in 2012 – UFC Special
Mixed martial art (MMA) fighters are known for their agility, versatility and aggression. Once such MMA fighter, currently part of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) since February 2007 is Donald Cerrone. The 28-year-old
MMA fighter has proved his worth many times inside the fighting.
He started his successful professional MMA career from February 2006 against Nate Mohr. He was undefeated when he began his career and enjoyed a nine fight straight win which ended in January 2009. He was defeated by Jamie Varner
at WEC 38 hosted by the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).
During that time, Cerrone was winning and losing his bouts. He won at WEC 41 in June 2009 against James Krause but faced a defeat by the hands of Benson Henderson at WEC 43 in October 2009. This was followed by a win at WEC 45
in December 2009 against Ed Ratcliff but he lost again in April 2010 at WEC 48 against Benson Henderson.
From September 2010 Cerrone has been on a winning streak. He began his winning run from September 2010 when he defeated Jamie Varner at WEC 51. During this time, he also made his much anticipated UFC debut. He made a successful
UFC debut in February 2011 at UFC 126 when he defeated Paul Kelly.
Cerrone, who stands in at 6ft and weighs at 155lbs (pounds), has been undefeated ever since he entered into the UFC. He has defeated Vagner Rocha, Charles Oliveira and Dennis Siver at UFC 131, UFC Live and UFC 137 respectively.
Being part of the lightweight category, Cerrona has been a tough competitor and has been a main contender for the UFC Lightweight category.
In the UFC, he has won all four of his bouts, making him an intimidating opponent. His last two fights in the UFC, at UFC Live and UFC 137, gave him two accolades which also added credibility to his name. At UFC Live event, he
earned the title of Knockout of the Night while at UFC 137 he was given the title of Submission of the Night.
Nicknamed Cowboy, Cerrone has maintained a strong position for himself in the UFC and MMA division. He has not only proven his worth inside the UFC octagon ring but also in the MMA division on the whole. If he can win straight
bouts, defeat tough opponents and create dominance with his moves, then he can certainly deserves a lightweight title bout in the 2012.
When 2011 began, the lightweight division had various contenders. It was difficult for anyone, including the judges of UFC or MMA, to identify the possible fighters who were worthy of the lightweight title. But as the year 2011
draws to a close, it is fairly easy for everyone to understand which three fighters stand out in the lightweight division, who deserve a title shot.
These fighters include Benson Henderson, the former WEC Lightweight Champion, who will face Frankie Edgar, the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion at UFC 144 in February 2011. The second main contender for the UFC lightweight title
is Gilbert Melendez, who is the current Strikeforce Lightweight Champion. The third contender is Cerrone himself.
One might wonder if Cerrone would face Henderson in 2012. This could only happen if Henderson successfully defends in UFC lightweight title at UFC 144 against Edgar. For Cerrone, the question will not pertain to who he would face;
Henderson or Edgar, but the question would be when he would face anyone of them for the UFC Lightweight Championship.
