Donald Cerrone draws a sharp rebuke from WEC management due to inappropriate comments
World Extreme Cagefighting lightweight Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone drew a sharp rebuke from his employer after making some inappropriate comments during a radio interview. Cerrone was promoting
his upcoming WEC 51 rematch against Jamie "C-4" Varner.
The two first battled in January 2009 at WEC 38. Varner won the fight after he was unable to continue due to Cerrone delivering an illegal knee to his head. The fight went to the scorecards
at that point, with Varner securing the victory.
While talking about the upcoming fight, Cerrone had this to say, “He’s (Varner) really a f*g. I mean, that’s what he is, you know, and his true colours will show up. You can’t hide your
colours, man. They’re going to turn up and everyone’s going to see. He’s going to call timeout or he’s going to look for a way out, he’s got the b***h gene, man, and when you have a b***h gene, it doesn’t matter what you do…”
The hole that Cerrone was digging only got deeper with the following, "I hope my emotions take over and I just kill this dude. I hope this is the first death in MMA.”
Cerrone later apologized for his comments via Twitter, posting “I don’t really wish death on anyone! Just got caught up in talking s**t! My apologies, Jamie Varner, took it too far.”
WEC offered their opinion on Cerrone’s comments, making the following statement, “Donald Cerrone went too far in talking about his upcoming fight with Jamie Varner, and we believe he crossed
a line of decency in doing so. We will not tolerate a fighter who makes comments that are not consistent with our company values, nor will we tolerate the use of slurs that may offend any segment of the public."
This is not the first “death threat” controversy for WEC this year. Earlier in the year, while working as a commentator for WEC, former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion
Frank Mir said, “I want to break his (Brock Lesnar) neck in the ring. I want him to be the first person that dies due to octagon-related injuries.”
UFC president Dana White pulled no punches when asked about Mir’s statement, “I have never heard something so unprofessional and idiotic in my life.” Shortly after the comments, Mir was
let go as a WEC commentator.
With the Cerrone vs. Varner fight so close, it will be interesting to see if there will be additional repercussions for Cerrone after fight night.
