Donald Young, Matthew Ebden qualify for the main draw – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
Seeded at number one in the qualifying draw, world number 44, Donald Young of the United States forced his way through the qualifying competition, defeating Mischa Zverev of Germany, to reach the main rounds of the Shanghai Rolex
Masters on Sunday.
Being played on the outdoor hard courts of the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai, People's Republic of China, Young displayed his brilliance one again to simply outclass the German opponent in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Zverev hung in the competition for just 77 minutes of play, before he submitted to the fury of the 22-year-old American in the second set.
The American contestant secured 35 out of 51 first serve points on his 68 per cent precise serve, while the German lagged far behind with merely 13 points to finish on the losing side in the end. Young converted half of his eight
serve breaks and successfully defended five out of seven break points from the German to make a berth in the main round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event.
The American cracked two break points to pocket the opener at 6-3 and then carried on his belligerence in the following set to inch closer to victory. Young stung two more break point conversions in the set number two to conclude
his convincing victory at 6-4 to reach the main draw of the Shanghai Masters. He will play his opening round match against the local wildcard entrant, Maoxin Gong, in the main round.
In the other match of the Sunday afternoon, the second seeded German, Philipp Petzschner, lost his matchup against the 14th seed, Matthew Ebden of Australia, in the final round qualifiers.
Ebden took just 62 minutes to wrap up the one-sided affair in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to make a spot in the main rounds of the ATP World Tour 1000 tournament. The second seeded German was outplayed by four crushing serve breaks
from Ebden and utterly failed to register a single break point in the entire matchup.
The Aussie secured 26 out of 32 first serve points in the matchup, as the second seeded German lagged far behind with 14 points to finish on the losing side. Petzschner held serve in just four of his eight games and crumbled in
the second set to let Ebden in the main draw of the Shanghai Rolex Masters.
