Donald Young clears the opening round; defeats Peter Gojowczyk in opening one – Australian Open 2012
American prodigy, Donald Young, kicked-off his Australian Open campaign in an emphatic manner, taking down the German contestant, Peter Gojowczyk, in an action-packed five-set thriller on Monday. 22-year-old Young took two hours
and 38 minutes to register his memorable victory with the final scores of 6-1, 6-2, 4-6, 1-6, 6-2, marching into the second round of the Grand Slam event in Melbourne, Australia.
The see-saw battle between the two contestants witnessed an amazing display of high quality tennis. The American was off to a flyer in the opening two sets of the match but lost his steam in the middle parts of the contest to let
his opponent make his way right back in the game. Gojowczyk made an impactful comeback in the third and the fourth set of the match to bring the scores on even terms but it was the crafty American who got proved to be the better man in the final set.
Young nailed two serve breaks right up to lead 4-0 in the opener and then held his remaining serves to close out the set with a breadstick at 6-1. He carried on his winning traits in the following set and struck two more break
points in the third and seventh game to reach 6-2, getting two up in the competition.
Gojowczyk dropped his serve for the fifth time in the match in the opening game of the third set but retaliated immediately to register his first break in the very next game. Two more break point conversions sealed the third set
in the German qualifier’s favour at 6-4. Gojowczyk blasted his way through the following set, earning a breadstick with two serve breaks in the fourth and the sixth game.
With the match levelled at 2-2, the final set was bound to be a nail-biter. Young dropped his serve in the very first game but made a tremendous recovery to launch a series of forays upon his opponent, breaking his serve in three
consecutive games to seal an emphatic victory at 6-2.
Young will take on the Slovak competitor, Lukas Lacko, in the second round of the tournament on Wednesday.
