Donald Young crashes out by Paul-Henri Mathieu in round one – Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2012
The American star, Donald Young, was crushed by the French wild card entrant, Paul-Henri, with a bagel at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2012 on Monday. He suffered a brutal 0-6, 1-6 shock at the hands of the 30-year-old in the opening round at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Masters 1000 event taking place in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in Monaco.
Young barely did anything at this clay court event and after losing eight straight games, he endured a gruelling defeat in his first battle against the world number 352. He was broken down six times and held his serve for the first time in the eighth game
of the match.
The American youngster made a drastic start at the Monte Carlo Country Club and lost the opening six games in a row to bear a 0-6 loss.
Ranked 50th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Young carried his losing ways in the following set and suffered the first blow in the opening game. In spite of coming on the score sheet for the first time in the third game, the
American lost the proceeding four games successively and gifted away a breadstick.
Summing up the underdog’s performance at this 67-minute encounter, Mathieu coughed four double faults and produced a lower first serve share of 52 per cent as compared to the American’s 62 per cent. However, he impressively marked 20 out of 27 points on
it and fended off all breakpoints he faced. Mathieu also capitalised on six out of nine break opportunities and cruised into the second round.
"Being on centre court today was something difficult to imagine because last year I was dreaming about it, and now I was there," said the beaming French in a post-match press conference. "I'm very happy that I won this match. But it's tougher on clay. There
are more rallies. I had a good first round and I took advantage of it."
The French will wait for the conqueror of the match between 12th seeded Kei Nishikori and Spain’s Albert Ramos.
Canadian booming star, Milos Raonic, will accompany Donald Young towards the exit doors. He was underplayed by Spain’s Albert Montanes in one hour and 48 minutes in their first meeting.
