Donald Young exterminates Michael Russell to sit in quarterfinal – Legg Mason Tennis Classic 2011
The 22-year-old American, Donald Young, once again delivered to his fans as he stood victorious locking his spot in the quarter-final of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic 2011 here on Friday, 5th August. The one hour twenty minutes
match ended up with the left hander beating Michael Russell 6-3, 6-3. The William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Centre in Rock Creek Park over loaded with fans standing to cheer their player’s win.
Thie was the pair’s second meeting in two weeks. His last meeting against Russell ended up in misery as he lost the match 6-0, 6-3 on his home ground, Atlanta.
On the other hand, the strong yet old countryman, Michael Russell, finally broke as he got blown into pieces by his young counterpart. Ranked higher than his winning challenger, 109, the 33-year-old had put forward a concrete
defence however, still lost the match.
Serving the opening game, Young double faulted only once. He got hold of a meagre 52 percent accuracy of his 1st serve and secured a 75 percent win on it.
Without doubt the 33-year-old had shockers as he saw an upgraded version of Donald Young thrashing him to win the first set 6-3. Russell totalled only 25 points against 34 of his challenger. Young concluded the first set with 22
service points and 12 returners moving on to the next set.
With the second set on its way, the first set dominator retained his grip on the match beating his countryman once again with the same score. With 3 breakpoint wins by the 22-year-old, his unexpected top spins and breakpoints frustrated
the right handed oldie to play shots that went miles away from the circuit. This caused the 33-year-olds’ service accuracy drop to 44 percent in set 2.
Finally, Young win in the second set (6-3) squared off the two with a head to head record of 3-3 with a final match score of 6-3 and 6-3.
Young, being interviewed after the match, said, “I wanted some revenge and to just go out there and play a lot better than I did previously. Also It’s kind of tough, at least for me, to play at home in front of my family and friends
that I normally don’t get to play in front of. It’s exciting and difficult at the same time,”
The 22-year-old will now face the 4th seed of this week, Marcos Baghdatis for a spot in the semis.
